My dad and I got all the big furniture into the house yesterday, with the help of a friend.

Today, my dad and I are bringing boxes from the house to the apartment.

We began at 8 am, and I was cleaning the garage, opening boxes, putting the stuff I did want into seperate labeled boxes, and donation stuff into its own bags, and trash into well.. a trash bag.

I was cleaning this box full of sympathy cards from the time my grandparents passed. I got to the bottom of the box, and realized that there was shredded newspaper . I nudged the newspaper a little bit and I screamed

In the shredded newspaper was a nest of.. MOVING PEANUTS?????????????  I don’t know what else word to describe this!!

I screamed and started cussing because I was freaked out

My dad was nearby, and there were 2 window guys putting in new windows at the house, and all 3 came running to me!!! My dad was sweeping the garage and he went to look at the box!!

        UNBORN BABY RATS

The mommy wasn’t there  I think the rats were feral, and its mother left

My dad left the box outside of the house. I was shivering the entire time afterward  It was so scary and freaky. I’ve never seen unborn baby rats before

Any stories of scary or unusual things while cleaning?

okay that sounds very disgusting. how is that even possible? i guess i have never learned about rat’s reproductive system. bleh.

when mom sold the house she and dad lived in a few years after he passed i helped her clean out the attics and the shed. she’s terrified of mice and we knew for sure there were critters. i reported that i was not at all scared of mice and volunteered to crawl into the attic spaces to pass boxes out to her. no prob. there was evidence of mice but we found none during our efforts. then we went out to the shed. dad’s old clubs were stowed on a shelf laying down at eye level and when we started to pull clubs out of the bag a mouse lept out right at our heads! who was the one who screamed the loudest and ran the furthest away? ME!?!?!! lol. i guess i do have a fear of mice… when they leap out at my head!

                How could they be unborn?

I would’ve freaked out too. We kept my dog’s food in a cardboard container. It was like industrial cardbord. My dad brought it home from work and he got it specifically to keep mice out of the food. Well, I went to feed my dog and opened the lid, then the bag. And a mouse comes flying out! Scared the crap out of me! Of course my dog was just like “what?” LOL

I doubt the babies were abandoned. The mother probably just left when she heard noise or she was already out looking for food. What time of day was this? I am used to dealing with little baby mice because of school. What’s funny is that mice actually know which babies belong to them. I would clean out mice cages where there were several nests and I would just pick up all the babies and put them in a container. Then when I would give them back, the mothers would scramble around and sort out the babies. One time there was a baby left over, so I picked it up and showed it to a few mothers. Finally, one decided it belonged to her and she took it from my hand.

I think the worst things we’ve seen during the de-cluttering my son and I have been doing the last few weeks is all the strange and out of the way places my two cats can leave hairballs that I don’t see until they are firmly stuck to whatever they hawked them up on. VERY gross! I usually hear them when they are sick and clean right up after them..but they wedge themselves in between shelves and stuff and heave in there when I’m asleep. Nice little surprises these are when I do get around to them.
I’ve tossed a few books I was keeping because of my Griff cat who likes to sleep on bookshelves and then gets his fur EVERYWHERE in there. Little bugger. He is a maniac if you try brushing him…will take your arm off at the elbow. Lint rollers don’t work either.

Lots of fur in places it has no business being…but no live critters. Well…a few dead bugs that I think must be some kind of wood worm that must’ve found it’s way in from the old garage, but what surprised me was we’ve seen very few, if any, spiders in the house! I truly think these creatures only seem to infest my daughter’s room, who is deathly afraid of them. She kills no less than two every couple of weeks, but I don’t find them anywhere else in the house. 0_o

They KNOW where she lives…mwahahaha! ~_~

What gets me is ants. I had a whole phalanx march through my kitchen in my childhood home when I was staying there alone one day…they were five abreast and the trail ran from my larder to my kitchen sink, a good twenty feet or so….YUCK! I had a cat and dog at the time and didn’t want to spray poison, so I spent the day drowning them in peppermint oil and lemon peels.
There was an old horror movie when I was a kid called Phase IV, it was all about killer ants. That stuff creeps me out bigtime, I was feeling like I’d fallen into that movie!

Sorry you had to see the little ratties like that, Brittany. I am like most here who’ve posted about not really being freaked out by mice or rats, but I still don’t want to find them in my living quarters! 0_0 I did have a mouse run up my arm in the larder in that same house when I was scooping dog food and the suddenness of it shocked me…but afterward I was like, “Aw poor thing…thought he was getting a free meal and wound up trapped.”
Of course, you have to be careful with the wild ones. You never know what diseases they may be carrying.

I probably would have been like “aw cute…babies.”

LPT – I think I would have been the same. Poor babies. I’m glad you clarified it was newborn babies too not unborn – I was a bit confused about that.

I love rats, I’ve had many as pets. That said – I can see the problem with wild rats in the home. Not so good. I’m sure you dealt with them kindly.

There was a case in the UK recently where a woman pulled a box of cereal from the shelf in a supermarket, and a nest of baby mice fell through the bottom of the packet :0
