My niece has a guinea pig that’s in a 2 x 3 cage. We were over there for her birthday a couple weeks ago. I looked over there and her food dish was filled with that cheap food you buy at Walmart. You know, the “festive” kind with all the junk in it. She was picking through her food and only eating the colored pieces. I said something to my husband and he was like “what did you expect?”. =\

I think sometimes you just have to accept (re, ignore the best you can) that not everyone will take care of their pets the way they should, and that a lot are fine with “just getting by”. I went to this place today, they have a resturant thats on a ranch, and you can go through the farm and stuff. They had 3 big bunnies in a small cage hanging in the air, something that looks like oats in a bowl, and an unside down igloo to sit in I guess. I snuck a bunch of hay from the barn in there and they tried to binky but couldn’t because the cage was too small :'( The bunnies looked healthy enough, and since they did have (questionable) food and water there isn’t really anything I can do. Sad.

I know right? Whats worse is they are literally attached to a HUGE barn which only has a couple decoration things and a few bales of hay (but they don’t store the hay there) and they could EASILY create a space for the bunnies with enough room to run and a healthier environment without affecting their routine at all. Ok actually they’d have to get a couple litter boxes, and put in a couple weeks of training them, but still.

I once got yelled at by a rat owner because they kept their rats in a tank and fed them seed diets, they also didn’t have toys, anything to hide in, pine bedding, and the tank was only a 10 gallon and their were two adult males in it. I explained (nicely) why none of those things are good for rats and they yelled at ME for trying to help her pets. :/ Some people are just ridiculous when all you are doing is trying to be nice and help their pets. Some people also don’t see small animals as “animals” either, and they think if they lose a pet they can just go out and get another one. :/ I can’t imagine Rat owners like that because I love my babies so much, and I would do anything for them, but there are people like that out there.

If they won’t come to reasoning, just ignore them… or talk even louder about your healthy happy pet.

unfortunately, you just have to let it go. The person may have no idea what they are doing, but at least they are caring for it, like feeding it something rather than nothing. Another thing you have to understand is that she probably became very upset when you started giving her things and telling her what she is doing is wrong. I am sure she will eventually come around, but she just was probably taken by surprise and maybe didnt want to admit that she was wrong, there are many of those kinds of people, my dad is one of those. At my barn, people love to tell others what they are doing “wrong.” I even had one person go into my horse’s stall and fix her blanket behind my back as I went to get her treats! It’s not fun. So its just something you have to shrug off. It sucks to know that a sweet little animal is not getting the right kind of attention cause an ignorant person didnt research properly or cannot take advice well, but it happens everyday.

Tell my niece? No, I didn’t say anything. My husband didn’t want me to upset her. She’s only 9. Besides she was telling us all about her guinea pig book and how it says you can eat them. Then she said, I don’t know how you would eat one. They don’t look like they have a lot of meat on them.

Yeah.. But it does upset me  She doesn’t even give it veggies! Or let it out to run around. She ONLY FEEDS IT that unhealthy mix of treat pellets stuff and yogurt drops!  Shame. I know because we used to be really close.  I went to her house alot. She still continues with the bad envirment for her piggie, because I was invited to her birthday bash this year. I was suprised , because I thought she hated me. But she is more “weird and nice i guess.” Yet annoying now. Anyways thnx for the reply! Keep em’ comin’!!

I think the only thing you can do is let it go. There are always a lot of people who take terrible care of their pets. Sometimes they don’t know better but would like to learn, so sharing information can really help. Other times they don’t want to be told they’re wrong (who does?) and the more you say, the more they ignore. Since the piggie has a place to live and does have food to eat, there isn’t anything you can really do about it.
