Checking special parts

My buck mini lop, Quincy, is about 13 weeks old. His appointment for a neuter was made about a month ago, as I assumed that he would be ready to go by August 25…. he will be 15 weeks, so nearly 4 months. However, I can’t tell if his special parts have come in yet?! He’s super fuzzy, so maybe I’m just not seeing them?  How can I check, I don’t want to try to trance him because I have heard that’s an awfully terrible experience for them.

Bribe him with a treat above his head so he stands on his hind legs. If you cant see anything down there, his testicles likely havent come in yet

I’ve tried that, I don’t see anything! I guess they aren’t there yet. . . I thought maybe I couldn’t see because he’s fuzzy? I have no idea how big these things are supposed to be lol…Should I be able to see them without having to move any fur around? We are getting awfully close to his appointment…I’m wondering if I need to reschedule. The vet does a lot of rabbit surgeries, and they only offer a limited amount of spots per month for customers using the B.U.N.S voucher.

I would assume the vet will check to see if his testicles have descended prior to his surgery/anaesthesia. I couldn’t see them myself but when I took Peanut in if I remember correctly the vet had a quick look and sort of nodded lol.

I had a hard time with this after my boys’ neuters. I just started doing it while they were laying on their sides. I’d pet them and gently lift one leg and take a look.

They do require me to pay for a presurgery exam so I’m sure they would check and make sure they are there. I just figured it would eliminate the hassle of going and him not being ready. But that would be strange for him to be 15 weeks without them descending, right?

Ah yes, of course. Is it a long journey to the vets? I think boy buns can actually pull their testicles up inside their bodies even after they’ve descended so even if you don’t see them, it doesn’t mean they haven’t ‘dropped’ … because nothing with  bunnies is ever easy

Wick’s didn’t drop until 8mo. I picked him up as usual and felt a fleshy thing at my finger, which had never been there before. I looked (lifted a leg while he was lounged on his side) and voila,
one teste was down. The second didn’t drop until a week later. Once they were both down, he never retracted them. I could clearly see them it I peered under his tail. They were weirdly big compared to what I expected, haha.

Perhaps you’ll feel it or see it clearly when they do decide to drop!

Nope, not weird at all. Blue’s dropped around 7 months. Bombur’s dropped between 3 months and 4 months (super early). And Badger’s didnt drop until sometime after 7 months.

Ahhhhh s****. I thought 3-4 months was the normal amount of time… Honestly it would just really, really suck if we have to wait that long, as I have him in my room currently separated from my other bun. I had a stress fracture in my back when I was younger and have had bad back problems since then, and I cant handle hurdling over baby gates for several more months. Hopefully he gets on with it… lol… otherwise I’ll have to keep this pain in the ass gate situation up.

The vet isn’t far away, if I have to reschedule I will just have to work out taking off of work and my husband will have to take off as well, we share our car. It’s not a huge deal, it would just be a lot easier if we could make it to the appointment on the 25th. I just thought that around 3 months was basically the “standard”; I’ve never heard of it taking 7 or 8 months! Ah, I can’t be bothered by the little guy though, he’s just too sweet! Take your time Quincy

Buns can retract them, so they could be there and just not ballooning when you’re looking. Sounds awkward (because it IS awkward) but get a plush toy or a balled-up fluffy small towel and work it around a bit under his tum to try and get him to hump it. While he’s humping you should be able to see two pink baloons between his legs – about the size of large peanuts in the shell.

With bucks it’s warned a lot on the net and by vets they can drop by 10weeks so people do not think they can be careless at that time around females and wind up pregnant because they CAN drop that young, and they can retract them when you check too and convince their owners they are still safe ( when they aren’t obviously)

But just cause they can drop that young doesn’t mean they do
My current boys never did drop. My past boys were all dropped before 3months.
I have friends who’s flemish giant brothers didn’t drop till a year old- it varies greatly.

Also they are in a different place than most inexperienced rabbit people would look for them … they are to the sides… google images may help

Oh geez…. I’ll try the humping technique Q8, and take a look on google to see what I’m looking for… I feel like I might have some explaining to do to my husband if he sees me “encouraging” him with a stuffie LOL

Hey – I think we’re on a similar time-line with our bunnies! I got Mickey (male) to bond with Theo (also male).
Mickey was 8 – 10 weeks when I got him the first week of July..
So I was planning to have him neutered asap, and like you, decided to book him in at the end of this month. I can’t locate his “bits” either, lol, my theory is they suck them up.. and I don’t think I could find a deflated “peanut” amongst all that fur..
He is a fuzzy beast as well..

I also separate the bunnies with a baby play gate, and am forever climbing over it .. It’s very awkward because I have to stand on my tip-toes and do some stellar gym movements. .
Can’t wait to get rid of the gate! May both our bunnies be ready for their ops this month

Yessssss this gate set up SUCKS! My Ophelia is a jumper, so I have TWO gates set up, one in the hallway and one in the door frame. So that way she would have to make a jump over two of them before making it into the room. But my gosh it is such a pain!! And I only have two gates, so when I allow them to see each other, I have to stack the two in the doorway so that the barrier is 4 ft tall because I don’t trust my little Olympic jumper -.- every time I need to go to the room it’s a whole fiasco to get her away from the area, then go back remove the top gate, hurdle over the bottom gate quickly and then turn around and put the second gate back up before she finishes her bribe and runs over….

…..So yes, I’m praying that we will be ready by the end of the month!!! lol

Oh wow, that’s a heck of a lot to go through even once a day! I really feel for you.
If I were you, I’d take him in on the 25th as booked, and I’m fairly confident the vet will find “those things”

Just a little update!

He won’t sit still to let me lift a leg and get a look… but twice I have tried to cop a feel and I am pretty sure I felt some fleshy bits that weren’t there before! Wooohoo!

Nothing like copping a feel on your rabbit…. haha. It’s good that you have a better idea now! I remember when Wick’s first descended, he hopped a bit weird, then a bit weird when the second descended. What a goof.

It sounds horrible to say cop a feel, but in all reality it’s exactly what I have to do to get an idea XD He has such a silly hop anyway…. his feet are HUGE. I mean GIANT lol it’s hilarious when he tries to run fast cause he looks like he is going to send himself flying hahaha. Too much power in those big ol feet for his tiny little self!

Yes, please send good vibes! After having gone through a spay first, I am feeling MUCH less stressed out about this time. And the vet we are going to has tons of experience and I’ve heard some great things by fellow rabbit owners! I am feeling confident

lol he’s certainly acting like he’s the king of everything!  I have been held hostage as he demands pets… and getting nips if the petting is stopped before he grants my freedom  silly guy

It also helps that neutering is a fairly simple operation compared to spaying, to my understanding, and the recovery progress is generally quicker. Of course, you’ll have to wait it out another month for the hormones and sperm to fade out…remember what they say about bucks being able to get does pregnant from across the gap between cages. (Actually, I still find that a mite hard to credit…)
