I like to check prices and compare. one reason I do that is so I can sell my plants and services better at a cheaper price, which puts me ahead. also I am a female, and when we go shopping we compare. we get the most food for the cheapest price, with a good brand. Anyway I just wanted to tell you this story right her below.
You know I go Dandela a water bottle, My friend that has the lop bunny told me they could drink from a bowl, also how do you think they drink in the wild , but anyway the breeders kids said she was used to a bottle. so I got her one, it is in the pics. I got one from walmart that holds 9.0 oz of water (which in 24hrs, is refill time), back to the point, I was in a pet store today checking prices. they had bottle that were not marked, and smaller for 6-10 bucks/Dollars. I got Dandela’s bottle at walmart for only 2 bucks/Dollars, that included tax and all. But you now see why I compare prices. The bottle I have, I can monitor her water intake and it is built for more water, and more durable then the one at the pet store. And a ton cheaper. And It does not leak at all at the moment. but you know they wear out and start leaking. anyway I just wanted to share all this with you all, so please compare prices and duribility before buying. You can save alot of money that way.
I have terrible luck with water bottles. I have tried the cheapest to the fancy pants glass ones. Most of mine leak. Though, when I volunteered at the rescue, those cheaper plastic ones did just fine overall. I just don’t have good luck with any of them personally for some reason.
I have been using crocks/water bowls for years now. I just have to refill it twice within a 24 hours period and be sure that no gunk has fallen into the water. I don’t have to worry about the later part as much since my bunnies have more room.
I finally bought a small waterer for Lolli. She has access to water all day but it doesn’t drip all over like her water bottle did. I was getting tired of paying money on bottles that just started leaking within a year. And I rarely shop at Walmart. Just a personal thing. But that is great that you found a water bottle so cheap there!
I have used both, and all my buns so far prefer the bowls. Not sure about my newest little guy, I’ll have to try him with both to see ![]()
I use a bowl too…I feel like they are overall cleaner. With bottles there are so many little parts that are constantly damp; it seems like an easy place for mold to grow. However, bowls are much easier to clean, as long as your replace the water and rinse out the dish as necessary.
My buns have both a bottle and a bowl. They both use both equally. I think the bottle was maybe 4 or 5 bucks, it’s just a basic 30oz bottle. The bowl is actually one of those heavy, glass ashtrays… unused of course.
My rabbits are bowl users as well. Even if your bunny used a water bottle before, she can definitely learn to use a bowl.
As for water bottles, I help at a guinea pig rescue and guinea pigs use bottles and apparently the best kinds are Lixit. With bottles, you need to make sure the washer thing is in the top and it’s filled to the very top with water.
the best water bottles i’ve ever had where these flip top ones with a push valve instead of the usual ball. they’ve survived five ferrets and a bajillion rats. while i was fostering, i’d have given my left arm for a dozen more. but, they were not cheap, and fostering is expensive, so i could only afford a couple.
currently, puppet has the biggest water bottle i could find. his cage is small and i didn’t want to take up room inside with a bowl. not to mention, he drinks a TON and i was filling his bowl four or five times a day. rue has a bowl.
The ones with balls will always end up leaking sooner or later. My bottle came with instruction to fill the bottle and put the stop on. Then squeze the bottle, for a little water to pass through the ball. This is to keep a vacum on it and keep it from driping. As soon as Dandela saw it it. well let me explan, she was upstairs laid down relaxed, when she seen me putting the bottle on she got up fast and ran down stiars and strated drinking right away, And she still had water in her bowl, so she was getting enough water, just happy to be back on the bottle I guess.
I don’t mind cleaning the bottle @ all. I have to bottle brushes for cleaning and all. After all, I do have an infant. Next month when he turns 1 all bottle are going bye bye, we done started him on a sip cup and all so he should do fine.
I was planning on checking out the water bottles at the Hoedown Sunday, Sarita. The bunnies prefer bowls, but the guinea pigs make such a mess (please guys, wipe your feet before sticking them in the water) and I’ve tried every type of bottle I could find for them and they all seem to leak after a few weeks.
I follow the instructions on each but I wonder if Brownie isn’t just sitting there playing with it to watch the water drip down and soak the blanket.
Michelle, what type of waterer did you get?

Whats a waterer?
I have a small pet bowl in her pen filled with water that was 1$ at petco, and a plastic waterbottle in her cage that was about 7 bucks at the local pet supply. I try to shop there more than anywhere else, support local businesses! ![]()
I got a waterer like this one. I have it sitting on a phone book so it’s a bit higher for her. She seems to like her bowl and waterer up higher. Probably easier for her to reach over her big dewlap. lol I only fill it halfway full as I change it every couple of days.
Ahh interesting. I was debating on getting one of these-

thanks for posting those two, I need to think about doing something else. I love the piggies, but my gosh they can make a mess.

Maybe that’s what’s happening as I know it has to be me. So I must be doing something wrong. I did squeeze it, but maybe I didn”t fill it to the top!
I still have one of the bottles and would like to have it for backup so I will try it again.
How do you get hay, fur, or… general “ick” out of the bowl of the waterer, without completely dumping it? I have to dump and rinse out their bowl twice a day, morning and night… but if you only fill it every couple days…?
the only bad thing about the bowls is buns like to dunk their toys in it (especially cardboard tubes) and then fling them around and get water everywhere.
if you go with bowls,, i strongly suggest the large ones that clamp to the side of the cage as some buns like to show off their strong neck muscles and toss the whole thing full or not.

*snickers*
HAHAHAH Long hair mike.
sometimes i’ll hear a splash and realize chacha stuck her nose in the dish.
Beka – So far, she has only gotten something in her water twice. A piece of hay and a poop. I have it at the end of her litter box so she’s forced to jump in and out of the front. So maybe that along with it being up about 2 inches is making a difference in that. ??? Honestly, I have no clue. I was fully prepared to have to clean it out every day or more, but she manages to not get stuff in it. But after 2 days, the water does start looking a bit scuzzy. So I change it every 3 days and don’t fill up the reservoir up all the way as that would be pointless.
The one that I have is rounder and more bowl like. Like this one:
After thinking about it, I really do not know how she doesn’t get crap in it. When I gave her actual bowls, she was always dumping it over or getting stuff in it that I just gave up and went back to her leaky water bottle for a bit before buying the waterer. Ahh…the mysteries of the water bowls. LOL
Hmmm, yeah maybe because it’s higher. My buns’ bowl gets a fine covering of fur if I forget and don’t dump it out twice a day. I’ve gone 24 hours before (they still have a back-up water bottle) and it’s downright icky!
