My husband brought in the Sunday paper this am- and one of the first things I do is check the local grocery store ad to see what bunny friendly produce is on sale.  I have been doing this for well over a year and never really thought about it.  Who else does this????  I already know I am going to shop there- Meijer has the best and freshest produce section- so we have to shop there weekly for the bunnies.  But every Sunday I check their ad to see what is on sale for the bunnies even though we don’t generally grocery shop until Wed.

          Hehehe

As a grocery cashier, I get SUPER PSYCHED when I see that lettuce rings up for $1 a head

Cashiers like to look at the new ads (the store ad runs from Sunday to Saturday) to make sure they are up to date on what is on sale (to help customers out, or for future shopping trips hahaha).

Wheat grass was on sale for buy one get one free about 2 weeks ago. Chacha doesn’t need any wheat grass, as I have a few pots of it growing for her.

How much is lettuce going for in your area?

Romaine, red leaf, and green leaf are $1.29 a head.

Our grocery ads go from Thursday to Wednesday (weird, I know.) And the back page of the ad (the produce page) is always the first spot I check. On occasion, Kale will drop down to 79 cents a pound, so I always get a bunch then, and if I’m LUCKY they run out… so then I get a few rain checks for the sale price that I can use at a later date. Romaine, Endive, Escarole, and Red/Green Leaf have all been $1.29 a pound for the past few weeks. I’ve also worked out a system to get veggies twice a week if there’s a good sale. I’ll buy Thursday when the price changes (enough for 6 days), then buy more on Wednesday before the price changes again (enough for 7-8 days to take me to the next ad change). Normal price is $1.49 a pound. The most I’ve seen romaine has been, I think $2.99 a pound over the winter. I try to find cheaper alternatives then or I’ll buy the bulk pre-packaged romaine hearts instead.

i started buying those little plastic bins of organic mix salad for my 4. Easier than chopping up lettuce for 4 starving bunnies lol.

I was so excited when I was steered to a local farmer’s market not far from here by a Weight Watchers member. I get fresh fruit there, and it’s really cheap compared to the grocery store, but I really make a special trip for their GREENS that are Huge! I never manage to eat a salad, but Herself has quite the variety some weeks.

Reminds me, as soon as the thunder stops I need to make a quick run to the store for greens….

Monkey – yeah I have been buying those too so much easier … plus they get the fresh produce I keep around the house for myself as well (I am a vegetarian, so lots of veggies in the fridge) lol

Our grocery store has a TINY produce section, sadly. so if I need to stock up on the more odd items I have to go 30 miles into town, guh. Can’t rush there for sales and the local store always has low prices (locally grown stuff).

I’m not sure of all their locations, but if you have a Costco near you I would suggest getting a membership and buying their bulk romaine heads! There are 6 in a pack and I think they’re $4 or so, and I buy a couple packs each trip. It lasts well over a week. It was definitely helpful when I was on vacation for 2 weeks and needed to supply greens to the pet sitter! They also have the plastic bins of spring mix which are also cheap compared to the food store.

Mine are on a somewhat limited diet – Otto gets poopy butt with new things occasionally, or they snub new things and waste my money. So, when I’m at the store I generally check the prices of the different lettuces right then, along with herbs and the other things they’ll eat and try to pick the cheaper items.

Romaine usually goes for $1.49-1.99 a head, though my new grocery store (since I moved) sells it for that price by the pound. I guess that’ll be good when only the tiny heads are available, so I can pay for weight instead of per head.

This is what I did for Lolli and Eddie. Especially when romaine went up to $2.99 lb over the winter. Sometimes it ended up being cheaper to buy the tubs of organic lettuce cause they got more of a variety. Plus it’s just easier. LOL
