CHEAP Spay/Neuter VET VIRGINIA??

Are there any low cost spay/neuter, in-out vets/clinics for rabbits in Virginia?

I don’t want to go to the vet near by, only one I know who does anything with non typical pets. They charge $40 new pet fee then $50-60 manditory checkup/visit fee. I don’t even want to ask them how much blood work and a spay would cost with them!

Look at the Blue Ridge Vet Clinic listed.  It looks like you can be provided a voucher – click on the link noted as well for that to get the details.

Not sure if that’s near you.  Otherwise there are other vets listed that you can call and get prices from in Virginia. 

I have no idea what costs are for spays and neuters in Virginia so do some calling around to find out.

Prices can vary greatly from one city/vet to another, so it’s a good idea to do research like Sarita said. It may be worth it to travel an hour or so away…

Also check shelters. When I was in Colorado all of the vets charged $300-400. Ouch!! Then I discovered that a shelter about 45 minutes away would do a spay for $80. It was definitely worth the drive. If you look up local or regional chapters of the House Rabbit Society they should be able to tell you what is in your area.

Yea, $80 may seem cheap, but for 3 rabbits it sure isnt. And some places still want the blood workup and all that done first in one visit, then the spay weeks later…

I seriously doubt you will find anything less than $80. That’s just way way cheap – it truly is. I have no idea either what is included in the cost for $80 but you need to find out – does that include pain meds? Does the vet have experience? Many many questions.

You may have to spread your spays and neuters out in order to get it all done.

It’s just one of those costs for having pet rabbits – vet bills tend to be more. The same procedures that you would do for a cat or dog just aren’t appropriate for a rabbit – different care, med, and anesthesia’s are needed.

If you’re looking for them that cheap, I hate to tell you… you’re not going to find them. It’s highly, highly unlikely you’d get spays done for $80 in any region. Possibly neuters for that much or around $100-120… but not spays. And you are right, you’d still have to pay for the initial vet exam and the post-op meds are probably separate. My advice: get the older girl done first, and then you can save up money for the younger girls. They won’t be ready until about 6 months anyways… Blood work should not be necessary for young, healthy rabbits. That’s usually reserved for buns that have had some health issues or are older than 2 years… It’s not a *bad* idea to get bloodwork, but it might be an unnecessary added expense when money is an issue.

Bahah! Poor Fern, don’t tell her that, she had to get blood work just because the vet thought it was better if she did. Apparently she was very bad with the blood work and it took extra long. She was not happy when it was over with!

Above is a list from the HRS website of recommended vets in Northern VA, followed by Southern VA. You can call them first to ask their prices. I agree that no one will charge as little as $80 for a girl. I think someone once got a discount when her vet did several bunnies, though.

Never say never… I really did pay $80 for my female to be spayed at the Humane Society of Boulder Valley in Boulder, CO last year  . There was an extra $12 for aftercare pain meds.

But really the point is that shopping around is totally worth it!! And talk to your vet secuono, they might be able to work out a package deal for your 3 buns or some sort of payment plan.

I hope you find a vet that you can afford. Just don’t let the cost mean more than finding a vet that knows what he/she is doing. See if you can find out why the price differs – if it is a matter of rent et.c. then it is fine, but if it is matter of experience, watching over the bunny when it awakes after the op, the type of sedation and medication it gets, then be cautious.

Sorry Alicat!   ;o)  No one is refuting the price you paid, we’re just saying that if Secuono is holding out expecting that price or better, it’s not likely to happen.  You are very fortunate to have a good vet with reasonable prices.  Hold on to that one as long as you can!  Does your vet do work with the CO HRS?  I’m not sure how near or far they are…

Blue Ridge costs $110 for neuters and I think $135 for spays. They do tons of them. My rescue has all of our spay/neuters done there. Dr. Behm and Dr. Campbell are FABULOUS. If it wasn’t so far away from me I would trust them with all of my animals. They are super knowledgeable about rabbits.

That’s where I took broken leg bunny and Smudge foster baby to be pts. It’s also where Digger was neutered and they responded immediately to his swelling issue.

Dr. Verna is also very good. I don’tknow what she charges for her S/N but she’s an awesome vet. She does Chiropractic and Accupuncture as well.

Eastern Exotic and Stahl are extremely expensive. They are very capable but I wouldn’t reccommend them just because they are price gougers.

I don’t know the others.

It was $110 for Nova, the lady I got Hubble from had his neuter done for $20 (*gasp* yes, it was with an experienced rabbit vet too, same place Nova got done. I think it was a sympathy neuter because he was dumped), and I have no idea how much Eclipse cost, but the lady’s mom was part of a rescue so it was probably less. I think it all comes down to who you know. A local vet near me gives major discounts if you have a voucher from a rescue. There used to be a place about an hour from me that did cats and rabbit neuters only, but it was like $25 only. More expensive than the $10 I can get a male kitten done for, but still way cheap.

I’m fixing to select the vets for my new buns right now. I live in Manassas, VA, so the best choice for regular veterinary services as recommended to me by Friends of Rabbits is Deep Woods Veterinary Clinic in the Yorkshire area just north of Manassas Park, about ten minutes’ drive from where I live. For emergency services, I’m probably going to go with Pender Vet Hospital in Fairfax, which has a 24-hour clinic. Stahl has been recommended to me, with the caveat that they’re quite expensive. Thus, as limited as exotic-pet insurance is, it’s something I’m going to need to have. I’m also looking into Pet Assure’s 25% discount program but I don’t know if Deep Woods takes it.

I don’t know about spay/neuter costs because I adopted from Friends of Rabbits and they have spay/neuter done on all the buns in their care as standard procedure once they’re old enough, but if you live in the metro DC area you should contact them and see if they can give you recommendations.

On the general point, I think the best way to keep vet expenses down is to give the best care you can to your rabbits – healthy diet with especial attention to keeping teeth in good condition and promoting proper GI function, as much exercise and socialization as possible, a clean and safe living environment.
