  After having to clean up 75% of the hay that fell out of my Petsmart Hay Wheel, I made a trip to the dollar store and purchased a cheap alternative that proved to be MUCH cleaner and easier for my bunny to get her hay. With the hay wheel she had to stand up on her hind legs and use her front paws to spin the wheel, which she didn’t mind. It ended up with all the hay spinning out of the wheel and onto the floor.
  
  The Alternative: Shallow plastic Tupperware container with a lid! $1 from the dollar store
  
  I cut 2 large circles in the lid that would fit my bunny’s head. I cut 2 circles instead of one so the joining plastic between the circles would prevent my bunny from sitting inside the container. The plastic lid is made from soft plastic so I had no problem cutting into it with an exacto knife
  
  To fill, simply open the lid, fill and close the lid. She enjoys it as much as her wheel and there is much less cleanup!

  Omygosh! This is an awesome idea. Especially since my huge hay box is across my apartment from my bunny cage…this would be a lot less mess. Might need a bigger container for my hay loving bigger bun though.

  Very nice idea! Great for bunnies that don’t chew too much on plastic.

  I love this idea! Right now I put Bumpy’s hay in a litterpan, not the one he uses for the bathroom, and he does make a mess of things with it. I think I might try this! Thanks!

  That’s a really neat idea! We had the hay ball when we first got Meadow and I found it actually decreased her hay consumption because she didn’t want to “work for it”! Now we have an open container for hay and it works so much better for us.
  
  Another thing we’ve done is stuff hay in an empty rectangular tissue box. Kleenex brand box that only has the opening on top, not the one where it extends down the side. I made sure that all the plastic was peeled off completely. The nice thing about this is that it’s cardboard so it doesn’t pose any risk if nibbled, and it can be replaced somewhat frequently.
