care of rabbit kits, help please!

Hi,

I have found myself a first time grandma of a litter of 3 ND rabbits recently. They are currently 2 weeks old, and are active and hopping about the cage.

I’m just wondering if it was alright to take them out to a separate cage in the day time, and return them to mum’s cage in the evening til morning the next day? The reason why I’m asking is because bunny mama has been rather irritated now that the kits are following her around and trying to suckle all the time! I was just thinking if that would be a good way to give her some peace in the daytime? Or does anyone have any advice regarding rampant ever hungry bunny kits?

Can you extend the cage with an Xpen so they have somewhere to play ? that would be the best option, they need to be with her for another 6 weeks. It’s true that Mum Bun only feeds once or twice a day but I am loathe to separate as they need mums cecal poops now in addition to the milk. or can you take mum out to have some down time which would be better as she is the one that needs more space.

Thank you so much for your answer! I kind of had the same idea too, but I feel aLOT better that someone experienced agrees! I’ve extended her cage with an attached playpen for now – which the little ones can’t get into so it gives her an “escape area”

Yup if you can make the cage bigger, or the area they use, or take them away for rest periods that would work great. Being a mom is hard and everyone needs a break

That sounds great Flubby. The extra space and time out will make for a much happier bunny. Make sure she is getting unlimited food too, lots of hay, greens and healthy plain pellets. Are you going to keep them ? I have 7 of my own and two remaining rescues waiting for adoption/foster. We can possibly help you find a good ezxotic vet in your area to have the spayed and neutered… Mum too as it can be an issue with uterine cancer and other problems later on if a bunny is not spayed.
