hmm, none of those are on any of those lists (unless I’m blind ). I would guess that yams are too close to potatoes so they would be a no?

I’m curious of tomatoes to because I always have tons of them around.

i know tomato leaves and vines are on the toxic list, sot sure about the fruit part.

I’ve given my bunnies leftover tomato fruit before; it didn’t seem to bother them.

I give my dogs tomatos all the time because they love them, but that doesn’t really help on the bunny front haha

Tomatoes are the only safe food you listed, but when I’ve given the buns a tiny bit of tomato, they ignore it.

I dropped a cherry tomato on the floor once, and one of my vigilant rabbits snatched it up and ate it, but I’ve never actually fed tomatoes to them. I see that tomato is listed on all of the food comparison tables in Lucile Moore’s new book on nutrition, so it is apparently a food that is okay for them.

I gave them tomatoes and Maddie loved them. Once she tasted the first she picked out the rest from the salad lol. Minnie didnt even get to taste any.

Goodness, I was always under the impression that tomatoes were bad for bunnies! 0_o Have I been neglecting their nourishment?
Would it be a treat? Or is it a good daily source of vitamins?

probably a treat, as they are a fruit. Just make sure no leaves are on them

Tomatoes are a source of Vitamin A and Vitamin C.

Neither of my bunnies have liked tomatoes… even Captain Danger, who likes just about ANYTHING.

For the posters who feed tomato’s to dogs-it IS debateable, but they are thought to be toxic in unknown quantities to dogs, and can cause anemia. I just don’t give them but I wouldn’t freak if he has a little now and then.

Zeus is a big fan of cherry tomatoes, I had someone give me a plastic bag FULL of them and I don’t like tomatoes.. so Zeus got them!  .

However, he prefers them cut up, and all the “guts” taken out.

That’s a good idea bunnnnnnie! I don’t like the seeds myself (they taste bitter) and would think in a rabbit’s GI tract they could get stuck anywhere.
I don’t think mine will go for it though…especially Fiver who doesn’t seem to like ANY fruit. But he loves pumpkin, so who knows?

What I find odd is…well an artichoke is just a glorified thistle…don’t rabbits eat thistles? :-/

I’m currently doing a lot of herb research and have found that some folks feed hazel sticks to their buns (it’s another UK thing) but can’t find why except as a boredom buster. Does anyone know of any other health benefits for bunnies from hazel?

On tomatoes, I was under the belief that the fruit is the only good part for a rabbit. You have to make sure all stem, leaves, and seeds are gone. If that is otherwise in the summer I am usually at a surplus of cherry tomatoes I could give her. When my plants go nuts I have so many tomatoes go bad because I can’t keep up with them.

If seeds are a no-no, then Momo won’t be getting too much tomato in her future. I hate having to de-seed the little buggers for my own use, let alone the rabbit. =/

We’ve fed Porky the stems and vine bits off of tomatoes many times, and they don’t cause him any harm. Also he eats onion grass (aka wild onions) out in the yard often and it causes him no troubles. Onion grass is quite closely related to green onions (aka scallions.)

Why are these things thought to be bad for bunnies? I’m pretty sure the wild bunnies eat them.

Just because they eat them doesn’t mean it is good for them. Vines and leaves are ont eh toxic list, so I owuld avoid them. it could cause lasting damage that isnt immediately noticeable.

I presented my rabbit a cherry tomato but after sniffing she groaned dissatisfactorily, so I gave her her usual pellets (that she likes a lot).

Hi Rabbitman! This is an old thread and we ask members not to revive old threads. You’re very welcome to start a thread of your own on the topic of what buns can and can’t eat.

Rabbits can eat tomatoes (they’re not toxic or anything), but most buns are reluctant to try new things. My Bam once ate half a cherry tomato that had dropped to the floor – apparently he didn’t like it very much or he’d have devoured it.
