Dasher was at the vet on Jan 3rd and she had earmites so we got Revoultion for her. She lives indoors but she loves playing outside. I’ve heard of people putting stuff like oil in their rabbit’s ears to sufficate the mites but is it safe and does it work or are there any other ways to prevent earmites? Dasher has a play pen inside and binkies everyday but it is not the same as being outside. It would be expensive if she kept getting mites but I still want her to be able to play outside.

If she is playing outside, she will likely get fleas. I assume you would be using Revolution then?

You could just do a maintenance dose of Revolution in the future. This would likely not the same as when you’re treating an infection which may take 2-3 consecutive doses. I’d chat to the vet about what sort of schedule would be suitable. Revolution takes care of mites, fleas, ticks, at their various life stages. It also takes care of some internal parasites too. It’s considered quite safe. A good all-rounder. : )

Yes I would be using Revolution. I’ve had her for 3 years and this is the first time she has had mites so idk how often she might be getting mites.

The reason I asked is because if you’re treating for fleas, it would also take care of any potential ear mites.

They can certainly pick up things like mites and other parasites outdoors. But it is also thought buns could have a low population of some parasites at all times and when they’ve become a bit run down (maybe through stress, another illness or age) their immune system is not as effective at keeping parasites under control. I really believe that has occured with my rabbit Gooseman. He’s had furmite a couple times and he has some chronic health issues. He hasn’t been outdoors on the grass in a long time. Intiallly, I thought maybe he picked up the mites on one of his vet visits but I really couldn’t say. His bonded mate didn’t get anything like he did (though I gave her 1 dose or Revolution just in case) and the other pair in the room haven’t had mites. So it strengthens my suspicion about his immune system.

How’s Dasher weight been? Sometimes their weight can drop off a little when fighting parasitic or other infections.

Her weight has been consistent and she’s been pretty healthy.
