As many of you may or may not know, I’ve had unfortunate experiences in the past relating to bunny safety in stressful environments. I’ve had these rough concepts floating around in my head for years now. Of course I don’t want to test them, not being an expert in bunny safety myself, but conceptually I cannot find a reason why they would not work.

Bunny Blinders: One of my most effective tactics to subdue my bunnies is to cover their eyes with my palm. Obviously the same concept applies to horses as well. Blinders work with horses, why not bunnies?

Bunny Sak (aka bunny straight jacket): I think this one probably occurred to me after seeing those sling sacks that some mothers wear to carry their babies. This is kind of the marriage of one of those sling sacks and a harness. I see this one as a bit more iffy, if not just because I don’t know exactly what movements are dangerous to bunnies aside from the un-restrained kicking out. But the best thing you can do is to support a bunny’s rear whilst giving it no room to kick, and restraining it from pushing off of you; the idea is that this would do the same thing if made in a manner that prevents the bunny from hurting themselves.

So then, my question is. Why don’t these exist?

I’m probably the only bunny slave that cringed at the bunnysak because I had a white rex named Lola who was the queen of the boob biters! Love your drawings.

              Love the sketches also.

The bunny sak, while it is a good restraint, doesn’t seem to support the rear firmly unless you designed a stiff bottom like a wood insert into the bottom part. I mean, when you put your arm and hand there while holding a bunny, you really are creating a shelf of bone that is very solid (and feels it) for the bunny to “sit” on. So maybe a modification making it not so soft?

The blinder, while a good concept and design, might be moved by a wiggly bunny as well, particularly if a little mouth can grab a side to pull it around. I’m asking myself how long you ever need to cover a bunny’s eyes so that would be helpful, rather than the short time used to cover a bunny’s eyes with a hand or thin towel in transport.

I hate being a devil’s advocate, but it may just need more thought and a new draft or two to get to something very useful. Keep it up, Edison!

Totally different suggestion: 2 good starts for illustrated stories about bunnies.

I also have another one, though it is small. I did ‘build’ this one as I figure it doesn’t pose any risk of harm, though I forgot to try it out last time I clipped toenails. I trance -yes I’m a terrible person but my bunnies flip out being picked up and I cannot bun taco them by myself, and it’s better than freaking them out ten times that with the vet. I’ve noticed that if you gently but firmly grab the hind feet, they are less likely to startle at the slightest accidental touch on the foot. Kind of desensitizing I guess. So I took a scrunchie and taped a thrice-folded-over sock to it for a bottom pad, so it can be slipped over the feet like an….um….uni-sandal. As in, the folded sock-pad is the bottom of the sandal and the scrunchie is the strap.

This way I can use both of my hands for calming and clipping.
