cage for two dwarf breeds?!

hey! so i’ve had my bunny flapjack for just about three months, and things have been going well! i think he’s currently in his adolescent stage (he’s around 7-8 mos) so there’s that, but he’s the sweetest, most well-adjusted little bunny i’ve ever met.

i work at an animal shelter (that’s where i found flapjack) and a new little lionhead girl came up on the floor today. she’s about 4lbs, 1 year old. flapjack is 3~ish lbs. i’ve been thinking about getting flapjack a friend, and the girl that i have in mind is very cuddly. maybe it would help to have a slightly more relaxed and mature rabbit around 

anyway, my apartment that i’m living in right now only allows 1 cage (so i can have multiple animals in the same cage). eventually i plan on moving to where i can get them a bigger space. the rabbit cage i have is currently this one: https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/you-and-me-living-the-dream-small-animal-habitat-40-l-x-175-w-x-21-h-2355340

it’s 40×17.5×21. whenever i’m not at work, flapjack has free roam of my room, so it’s not like he’s stuck in there all the time. do you think that space would be viable for a few months until i’m able to get a bigger cage? (ideally an x-pen setup would be nice, but flapjack can jump extremely high…he can almost clear 2 baby gates that are stacked on top of each other )

Hello, unfortunately I don’t think this will work. If you put two un-bonded bunnies in a cage together they will probably fight and hurt each other. You have to have them separated while you pre bond them. You can check the Bunny Info link for more about bonding. Best of luck!

You can’t just put two rabbits together, they need to be properly bonded and that means keeping them separate until bonded.

You need to keep them apart until both have been spayed/neutered for at least a few weeks (in case they aren’t already) and then introduce them gradually. You can find plenty of info and even bonding diaries in the “bonding” section of the forum

sorry, i didn’t make it clear in my post- i will definitely work on bonding before i put them in a cage together, but i was looking for information about once they are bonded!

I think it would be worth getting an x-pen now as you will find that really useful for the bonding process. You could then use it as a permanent habitat after they are bonded. Sounds like you’d need one with a roof! Younger rabbits are really adept at scaling over barriers but you may see that change as Flapjack matures and fills out body-wise. 

You could attach a pen to the cage to increase living space. I’m assuming you need keep the cage “for looks”  for apartment inspections etc??

that’s actually a really great idea. it would be simple enough to pick everything up and put it back into the cage if i know someone will be coming into our apartment! and yes, definitely an x-pen with a roof…he is a pretty good jumper + my parents have 2 cats (who really like the bunny but i dont want any mischief when i’m not at home of course!)
