my 5 year old rabbit, Harlow, does a strange jolting motion with his butt before passing a cecal. It’s not a twitch (though he does do that too when eating his salad :)). He has done the jolting most of his life but it seems like it’s more exaggerated recently.. he had a tissue injury in his leg last year that’s never fully healed but he can still run and binky. He tends to just favor his left side a little more. Besides the strange jolting motion he has no trouble eating, drinking, pooping or running around. Has anyone had experiences with this strange upward jolting motion of their bun’s backside?

I cant say I have experience with this, but when a bun has a gas issue, its recommended you lift up the bun’s butt a little bit to help gas escape. This jolting movement your bun does could be to allow cecals to pass more easily. That he does it more markedly now could be an effect of aging, or a change in intake of food, fiber and/or water. Is he eating hay like normal? Have you noticed any change in food preferences?

You mention tissue injury, does he have an open wound on his leg or how do you mean it never fully healed?

He still has a slight limp but no open wounds. And when he does run, he can’t run as fast or for very long. This was definitely an overnight thing from when he got the muscle injury. He’s eating hay like normal along with drinking water. The hay is the kind he has always had. His poops may be a little more misshapen and slightly smaller, but it may also be mama paranoia as I’m watching every poop that comes out of that little body now. After the muscle injury, the vet gave us metacam and told him to take it every day so I don’t know if metacam has a role to play in this as well?

Metacam can be a bit hard on the tummy. My bun gets meloxicam (the active ingredient in Metacam) every day, together with ranitidine to counteract the effects the meloxicam can have on the stomach.
