Well, tomorrow is Bunny’s spay! I am sooo nervous, but my vet is amazing, so I’m not too scared. Trying to decide whether to confine her to just her cage, or to just her x-pen. I know I am supposed to confine her to a smaller space, but how small? Haha. I think her cage will be good since that’s where she tends to go when she’s feeling annoyed or just wants to rest.
Wish us luck!! I will be spending tomorrow freaking out ![]()
She’ll do great!
Maybe confine her to the cage for the first 48 hours, and then the xpen for the rest of the week?
Best of luck. It’s very nerve wracking having a bunny undergo surgery but just remember it’s very routine. I’m sure she will be fine.
Beka, I think that’s a perfect idea. I don’t know why I didn’t think of that haha thank you!
best wishes!!!! I’ll be going through this too next week!!! I can feel your pain!!!
Good luck with your babys spay!
I would also confine to cage for a few days and then up to an x-pen as she gets less sore and begins to heal! If she has any levels in her cage though, remember to remove them so she’s not tempted to jump up and open her stitches!
Just got the call from my vet that Bunny’s surgery went really well and she just woke up a bit ago! They are keeping her for another five hours to monitor and make sure she eats and drinks something before she leaves. Thank goodness! I spent the last hours totally freaking out.
Thank you for the wishes all, I can’t wait to see my baby, it feels so strange not having her here!
Whoop!
Glad your girl did well during the surgery – I was so scared when they called me while I waited for mine to be done! Hope you got the house stocked up with some of her favorite veggies – my girl wouldnt eat ANYTHING. Until I finally got her to eat a few leaves of cilantro and then her appetite picked up a lot more.
I’m glad your little girl did well! =]
Just an update:
Bunny came home at 6:00pm last night. I left her alone for a little while with a bowl of water and hay in easy reach from where she sat herself.
I tried to get her to eat some herbs a few hours later, all of which she turned away from and hid her face from me, I eventually got her to drink some water, and then let her be for a few more hours.
Before bed I gave her some Metacam, which took me putting it on the tile in front of her and he licking it up, as she refused the syringe.
I left her with her veggies and hay and water and went to bed.
This morning I woke up at 6 to check on her and got her to eat one leaf of wet mint, but nothing else. She also took a few sips of water when I put the bowl directly under her face.
By ten she hadn’t eaten anything else, or touched her water as far as I could tell. I offered her some Metacam and she refused it, hiding her face.
The vet had said if she hadn’t eaten half of her normal amount of food by now then to call, and just as I picked up my phone to call, they called me to check on her. I let them know exactly what she had eaten, and that she had a few poops over night, and some extremely small ones this morning. They talked to the vet, who said to keep trying to get food in her, and to call back at three. I offered her a couple of kale krispies and she finally took one right before I left to bring the boyfriend to work.
Around 12:30, I offered her some Metacam again and after taking some off my finger, she went straight for the syringe this time (yay!)
13:00 I tried to feed her some dill by soaking it and then holding it on her nose/ mouth (I felt so bad, but really wanted her to eat!) until she started to lick the water off and eventually ate the piece, I did this with a few more peices of dill, and then some cilantro, and then even a piece of baby romaine! I did the same with some orchard grass and she nibbled the end. Yay! She then hid again, so I let her be.
She then started to groom herself, which I thought was great, until she seems to stop licking, and started to bite at her tummy. I got her to stop, and checked her incision (which was hard as she really didn’t want to be touched, and she totally did not care about a treat) and it seemed fine, except A black strand that seemed to be hanging a bit at one spot. The vet told me she had all internal stitches, so there would be nothing to pick at, so I’m wondering what’s up with that? I’ve kept her from messing with it since then, and gotten some more pieces of hay in her. The vet’s is closed until 15:00 for some sort of staff meeting, so until then I will continue to make sure she doesn’t mess with it, and then ask the vet whether to worry.
In general she looks SO much better than she did yesterday, and I;m so happy she is finally eating a bit! The first nibble of dill I wanted to dance! haha Thank goodness this is a vacation week for me, I don’t know how I would’ve handled being at work right now.
I am sooooo nervous for Sally’s spay. Harley took forever to bounce back from his neuter I can’t imagine how bad it’s going to be for a girl
It’s a very good sign she is already nibbling on food though! Yay bunny! Perhaps when she licked her incision some of the glue came apart revealing her stitches??
I’m glad your little girl seems to be doing great. I’m such a worry wort so I honestly would be doing the same thing as you and calling the vet concerning the strand. Keep up the good healing!
YAY!! glad she’s doing well!!
So, I called the vet and they said to come in ’cause it’s better to be safe. I saw a different vet than mine, but she was wonderful. This office has three bunny-savvy vets (lucky me!)
She checked the incision with me and it looked really great, but there was one outside knot, which of course my nit-picky Bunny found and obsessed over. So, the vet trimmed the knot so there was nothing for her to get to, and sprayed the area with a bitter antibiotic so she wouldn’t go for it.
Other than that, she said Bunny looks terrific and was gonna heal beautifully. YAY! I feel so much better.
Thank you again guys for the well wishes. <3
Glad all went well. ![]()
Glad everything is doing good — and definitely better to be safe than sorry!!! Oh course, Bunny would find that ONE spot. How has she been eating since your last post? It’s really heart-wrenching to see them hurting and not eating.. but as long as she’s nibbling, she’ll get through and be much happier in the end!
She ate all her veggies last night and has been nibbling hay here and there. She didn’t touch her pellets last night, but took a few this morning and left the rest. She really hasn’t been touching any water except a random sip here and there, but all hr veggies have been super soaked. She’s not pooping as much as usual at all, or anywhere near how much she does normally, but they are normal size when they do come, so I am not worried right now. Her incision looks great. She’s still licking it and any other shaved areas constantly and hiding it from me and in general, but not biting which is great! She also played with some of her toys this morning, and is stretched out right now on her tile, so definitely feeling much better ![]()
Yay! It can take a day or two for them to begin to come around. As long as her veggies are super-soaked and she’s eating them thats what important. Glad to hear she is feeling much better though! My girl licked hers too. I was constantly down on the ground making sure she wasn’t nibbling! But my vet had done the same thing and stitched her up on the inside and then glued the outside. To help the stitches so she wouldn’t yank on them.
