Bunny+Fire alarm = total mayhem!!

Today my bun Sweetie went through her first encounter with our living room fire alarm when my boyfriend burnt dinner.

She leaped out of her litterbox where she’d been sitting, skid into her wooden castle, flew out of her cage, rounded the corner with her feet frantically sliping on the hardwood floor and hid in the closet until I could calm her down. The poor girl!!!

When my smoke detector’s battery was going dead, my rabbits were talking to it.  Every 60 seconds, there’d be a ‘beep’, followed within 3 seconds by a “Thump.”

It was funny, even at 4am in the morning.

Poor bunny – smoke alarms are not nice!

I have been lucked enough to twice been woken up in my house by an evil woman talking about “low batteries”. She complains a few times, and then the alarm just goes off!
The first time was quite a shock, it was 2am – Why is there some woman in our house? And why is she talking about batteries? It was the basement alarm – not so bad for the bunnies. But they were not happy.
The second time was at 1am, in the living room right over the bunnies! This part of the house has 10 foot ceilings – old house – we had to knock the alarm down off the wall with a broom – while it is going off and the buns were running around like crazy trying to escape the evil screeching battery woman. ugh!

Our apartments had a fire alarm test a couple weeks ago.. and the indoor ones are extremely loud and high pitched… M&M were not pleased. Poor Monkey was terrified, running back and forth in her pen trying to get away from the noise.. Moose hid in his box.

Oh gosh. I was thinking how hard on rabbits ears that must be, but I’m sure ours has gone off while I’ve had rabbits. It’s weird what noises faze them and what ones don’t.
I’ve been pretty comfortable having free rangers for a while now but only last night did I start to think about new risks. Like if there was a break in and a door left open. Or an emergency and you’d have to go find where they are to get them in a carrier…. All food for thought I guess.

I met a lady today how has 5 bonded bunnies and I was talking about this thread, she use to set her alarm off and all her free range bunnies would know to get into their assigned carriers, in fact she has a clicker pitched at the same level as the fire alarm. The reason behind this is that if the fire alarm goes off all she has to do is close two bunny carry cages (2 fit in one and 3 in the other) pick them up and walk out the door. Great idea but I am sure I will never get my guys to that!

I had a fire alarm go off in our building and I managed to grab Pepper in fairly short order.  Since then I keep the carrier accessible in the kitchen for quick getaways.  If a fire blocks that end of the house, she goes in a pillowcase!

No bunny yet, but one time the fire alarm went off (I burned dinner. Oppps) & my dog Joe freaked! His old ears couldn’t take it I guess. Poor thing.

Wow, this just happened to us Sunday afternoon.  Bindi was in her playpen (the whole kitchen ) and hubby was frying up chicken fingers.  He had the exhaust fan on, the windows opened and the smoke alarm still went off.  Bindi ran in her little cardboard house, which would have been fine, but I bumped it as I was frantically waving the dish cloth at the alarm to get it to stop.  She took off like a shot and huddled under the table for 15 minutes or so, then she was fine.  I have noticed that she has gotten used to my German shepherd randomly barking at non-existent things outside the window – she just keeps right on eating or bathing or whatever.  The bunnies who go to their carriers at the sound of the alarm – now THAT is awesome!

yes my buns hate it.  They gotten used to it though .  It has gone off quite a few times.

AV, that is seriously impressive. Talk about being prepared! She’s obviously a dedicated rabbit caretaker.

Yeah she is, she has 4 cats, 5 dogs and 5 rabbits inside the house. They all know what the emergency sounds are so the dogs go stand by her (as you can never be sure where the fire is) rabbits into their carriers and cats into their carriers (2 a carrier) that way her husband and her can just pick up cages and get out. She said that everything else can burn but the animals and her husband are the most important thing. I found out that she lost a rabbit in a house fire when she was young so i can understand why she has put the time into the training

Raisins get M&M into the carriers quick.. Monkey is terrified of the fire alarm so I wouldn’t dream of making her listen to it alot.

I always have the carriers ready to go with fresh towels in them, just in case something happens anyway.. although its looking like I can make that one carrier now instead of two…

I had not thought about how to get the buns out in an emergency.
Sorry lacking on my part.
Especially since I once lived in a house in the middle of a high fire danger area. During the “season” I had all the things that were really important packed in a tote that could easily be grabbed and gotten out of the house. My cats were easy to get in carriers & the dogs would just follow.
But now . . . hmmmm?

yup they were checking our fire alarms yeterday too, the first 2 went off no problem.. bunnies ran everywhere! the third one near the bunnies didnt work when they sprayed this stuff on it so the guy went to o check some other things and it went off… he was in our attic so it was going off for about 8 mins… poor twix was freaking out… heshey was just super annoyed

I tested mine to see what would happen the other night, not the response that I thought…. Bugz started humping Anya? I swear that boy has some strange brain chemistry!
