Bunny Won’t Chew Anything!

Wasn’t too sure where to put this but I thought this was the best category. Feel free to move it if it’s wrong.

Anyways, Bun Bun refused to chew anything! It’s both a blessing and a curse. I can trust he won’t chew anything outside of his cage and the things he does (remote controls, soft rubber) it’s easy to flip it over or put it somewhere he can’t reach. The thing is he doesn’t chew anything he’s meant too! It’s frustrating because I don’t want his teeth to overgrow. He does like corn husk except for the fact corn husk expands when wet so I don’t want his stomach to explode because he chewed corn husk. He doesn’t like sisal, wood, cardboard… He destroyed a willow barbell ONCE and I bought it again and now he won’t touch it. Maybe it’s just the shape? I have no idea but he also refuses to chew hay mats, etc. Anything you recommend for a picky chewer?

I’m wondering if there may be something wrong with his teeth, like a spur or something, that’s making your bunny not want to chew. Is he eating alright?

Other than that, Meki’s a picky chewer. I’ll give her wood blocks and willow balls and wooden carrots and none of them are interesting. On the other hand, she loves to chew the support beams in her cage at night (literally the same as a wood block, but the wood blocks aren’t apart of her cage so they’re not interesting/fun).

What I find that she DOES consistently chew on, though, are thin little untreated apple tree branches. There were a few apple trees on a curb strip by my house that I knew 100% were not treated with any chemicals and sometimes the tree would sprout some smaller, softer twigs where an old branch fell off. I’d snip a few at a time and give them to Meki and my old bun Nefi and both of them LOVE to chew the bark off. Maybe it’s sweeter and tastes faintly like apples? not sure, but if sticks keep them happy, why not.

Meki also likes big woody pinecones that have opened, too, but I always feel safer buying mine from a pet shop just because pinecones travel and I’m not sure if the tree had been treated or not.

The best thing for teeth is hay, hay, hay so don’t be concerned about him not chewing anything else – that is due to boredom, not necessity.

In his previous home he had nothing in his cage. No hay or any chew toys but his teeth weren’t overgrown (vet checked) but it’s always been a worry to me since his conditions weren’t the best and I know for a fact his old owners got him from a pet shop, I worry he won’t do well under anesthetics but that may just be me being a worry wart. He eats plenty of hay fine though so thank you I’ll try and buy pine cones, too! He doesn’t like the big apple sticks but I think my friend has an untreated apple tree in her yard so I’ll ask her

Yum! Take advantage of that apple tree. They love the leaves, even when they start getting dry brown spots on them and are drying up for the winter.

Patrick loves! to chew… he will shred boxes and toilet paper tubes, he had a piece of wood, but it ended up in the pee side of the cage. Jerkass also loves wires, he chewed on one side of my heater wire which doesn’t belong to me, he did have 3 others that were mine, so I have to “fix” this now. 

I have Patrick in a run while i’m not home,but when I let him out, he hunts for stuff, but until then, I put a box in his run with some modifications and he goes inside and chews the crap out of it, its like a fun house.

Man, sometimes I’m jealous of destructive bunnies just because they can buy their bunnies so many things and know that they’ll be put in good use lol!

I second that, Alli!!  I should add Gus is destructive,but not with anything I provide!  Oh, there is a book I pulled off the book shelf and gave to him. He likes that because I’ve never let him have a book to destroy. Phone books are allowed, so they’re no fun

Im jealous of you OP! I wish my rabbit wouldn’t chew on things she isn’t suppose to. It’s annoying to check every single time you hear a chewing noise. Count your blessings.

My buns love a good cardboard box. They prefer those to most chew toys, although they enjoy unpeeled willow toys.

Buns are so sneaky hehe well good news is I got a willow tunnel and Bun Bun chewed it! Not sure if he’ll finish it off or ignore it from now on… Maybe I’ll order something from the binky bunny store and see if he’ll like anything from there haha
