› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Bunny wobbly and falling over (going to vet tomorrow)
My little lionhead didn’t finish her breakfast this morning which isn’t super unusual. She will sometimes go back to it if Kraken her partner doesn’t finish it all. Then when I got home she was napping in the corner. I went to feed them dinner and she didn’t come eat. I put the food closer to her and she started to move very wobbly and then fell over. She isn’t eating but I have seen her take a sip of water. I syringe fed her a little critical care and cleaned up cecals. She keeps falling over and it seems like she is mainly falling on her left side. She doesn’t seem to have a head tilt. I plan on taking her to the vet tomorrow but they aren’t open this late tonight. If anyone has any advice or knows what’s going on that would be great.

Hello, havent seen you about for a while!
She is so very cute, despite the wobbles. Im guessing perhaps an inner ear infection. Do you have any metacam at home? A conservative dose might help bring down any inflammation.
Thank you! I just gave her a dose that was previously recommended for her weight by our vet. Hopefully she will be a little better in the morning! It’s so scary to see her like this.
I haven’t been around much! I’ve been busy trying to finish up school and starting my first “real” job ![]()
She shakes her head before she loses her balance. I’m with Jersey, probably an ear infection.
Oh good re the metacam. I hope that helps somewhat. Do show the vet your video if possible, incase she’s not as wobbly there.
Is she showing any back and forth eye movements (nystagmus) ?
A few months ago, Potamus was off her food and started showing some horizontal eye flickering. I was fortunate enough to have metacam and baytril (previously subscribed for her) at home so I gave a dose of each as it was a Sunday. By Monday when she was seen, the eye movements had already stopped! The vet thought her ear drum looked a bit pushed out and she was put on a course of baytril.
thanks for the replies! Her eyes have been normal from what I’ve observed. I’ll try to update in the morning and after we’ve been to the vet.
The vet is not sure what it is without a CT or MRI. So Jitterbug is getting treated for an inner ear infection as well as EC. Other options would be anything affecting the balance portion of her brain such as a stroke or tumor, but those aren’t treatable. She isn’t moving much anymore, just chilling in the litter box but I did see her try to eat a piece of hay.
Sorry you are dealing with this. I’m also treating my Bindi for possible EC. Sending along some ((((Healing Vibes)))))
I’m glad she’s being treated for both. Great that she ate a piece of hay =) (((((Healing vibes)))))
Jitters is a little worse today. She’s not moving around at all and not eating. Her head is moving from side to side when she is awake.
She really doesn’t like to be force fed and I’m struggling to get her to eat enough.
I’m sorry. Sometimes the meds need a rather long time before you see progress. Could you mix the CC with something yummy, like canned plain pumpkin or mashed banana? Getting her to eat is of course extremely important at this point, she needs all her strength.
Thanks for the suggestions! Jitterbug has never liked treats unfortunately. She has never eaten any fruit. I might try the pumpkin though. If I add the pumpkin should I try to get her to eat it in her own? Like put it in a bowl in front of her? Or syringe feed it as well?
You could try serving it in a bowl or offering it on a spoon and see if she’ll try it. We have had reports of buns that really enjoys a pumpkin/CC mix. But if she won’t eat it, you can syringe it, you can dilute it with water to a more practical thickness/thinness. Pumpkin has good fiber so it’s a healthy addition.
Maybe she’d want to eat a little bit of rolled oats?
Kraken won’t stop chasing her and humping her
It’s 1:30 am so I’ve separated them so I can sleep for a little without worrying. I hope their bond isn’t broken forever.
This is such a stressful situation.
I don’t think their bond will break if you keep them within hearing- seeing- and smelling-distance. It’s of course very impractical to have him chase and hump her in this situation, so they must be separated. Maybe he just can’t figure out what’s wrong with her, why she’s being all weird.
Jitterbug seems to be doing better. We had to go back to the vet on Tuesday as she was still not eating on her own. They gave me a gut motility med/anti nausea med that seems to have helped a lot. Her appetite is not back to normal, but she is eating on her own. Her balance has also improved. She hasn’t fallen over once today where as over the weekend she couldn’t move without falling. I think Jersey and LBJ were right that she has an inner ear infection but I can’t be certain.
Oh and I found out she only weighs 2 lbs and dropped to 1 lb 11 oz on the second vet trip. I didn’t realize how tiny she was under that fur! The vet said not to worry about her weight unless she dropped any more.
Thank you for the update. I hope she continues to do better. Sometimes it take awhile for the antibiotics to work, especially if the infection is to the point where their balance is affected.
