Bunny urinating on my rug!

Hi,

Franklin is a 10 week old mini lop. He uses his litter trays well for the most part (although he is generally better at urinating in it than pooing in it). One is in his cage and one is on the rug…
I have a fluffy rug which he loves to run around on and when I first got him ctwo weeks ago he was forever urinating on it and trying to chew it. As a result I turned the rug upside down and the problem stopped apart from 1 or 2 urine accidents over the last two weeks. As he had improved I turned the rug back over three days ago and he no longer chews the rug (hooray!) and he doesn’t have big urine puddle accidents. Instead, after about 7pm onwards he leaves circular drops of urine about the size your thumb and forefinger placed together makes. Tonight he has done it 6 times and each time I have said no and placed him back in his litter tray. He only does it on the rug and nowhere else in the house or in his cage so I’m doubting that this issue is medical.

Any help or advice on how to fix this issue? I know I could remove the rug but as he loves to play on it so much and does so many binkies on it I would love to train him not to urinate on it instead.

I don’t think there are many options other than taking the rug away. Something about the rug, the smell or the texture, is making him want to mark it. Maybe you could just get a real cheap rug to replace it until after he is neutered. Neutering will most likely, but no guarantee, help the marking issue.

Thanks for the advice. Interesting to hear you think this is a marking/territory thing. I’d never considered that due to his age. As it is not spoiling the rug (stain remover is my saving grace at the moment) I think I will keep persevering until he is neutered and then reconsider my options.
