Bunny terrified of something and hiding

It’s past midnight here so I can’t call the vet but something weird happened an hour ago. Bleu was snuggling with Guinness in their pen as usual, after having had their pellets, and he suddenly got spooked by something. He hunched over to one corner and then ran to the litter box and then ended up lying down in one corner breathing hard and shaking. 

I was afraid he might be in shock so I draped a towel around him, added a heat pack, and sat with him petting him until his breathing calmed down. I thought he might be doing better, since he looked like he’d fallen asleep and he was doing well enough he was asking Guinness for grooming. However, he suddenly stood up and ran out and hid behind a container. I had to pick him up to see if he was hurt or anything but he doesn’t look like he’s hurt. However, once I put him down, he ran into his cat tower and has been huddling in there for the past 10 minutes. He looks like he’s gone back to sleep, but I”m not sure if that’s a good thing or not right now.

I’m not sure what we can do for him right now. Guinness looks okay and has been eating and pooping and drinking, but Bleu’s obviously bothered by something. The vet doesn’t open till 9 and the emerg vets aren’t bunny saavy, as far as we know. Any tips? I’ve thought of trying to entice him with his favorite, bananas, but I don’t want him to slow his gut in case there’s something wrong.

It’s good that you acted quickly to make sure he wasn’t in shock! It does just sound like something has startled him. Could he have heard or smelt something outside? A fox or some other predator? Or is there a chance that you smell differently/have been around other animals?

I don’t think it’s anything I did. I got up to cut some bread for a sandwich but since they’re in the kitchen they’re used to those sounds/smells. However, we do have coyotes that occasional are in the area and it’s been storming lately. It could’ve been something like that?

He’s still huddled in his cat tower, at the moment. Sitting with him and trying to keep a heat packet on hand.

Coyotes and storms would probably set mine off! Is he still eating and pooping as normal? How long has he been huddled?

I ended up moving him out of the cat tower, since I can’t see him properly in there and it doesn’t fit his bottles or lady bun. He promptly hopped back to the pen and found a corner to hunch up in and sleep again.

However, positive update! He just ‘woke up’ and, after throwing a small temper tantrum (because gosh, how dare we mess with the order of the pen while we were worried about him), started drinking. He’s currently grooming himself from icky hooman scent but fingers cross that we’ll see eating and pooping soon

UPDATE 2:

Poop and eating have occurred! Bleu decided that he really wanted his hissip and alfafa pellet treat, after all. Will likely sit with him for a while longer to be sure he’s okay but positive signs so far.
