Bunny teeth / Malocclusion

Hi everyone – I’ve just noticed bunny’s teeth have some problems (They’ve always had problems with her being a mini lop but this is kinda new). I’ll have a vet appointment sometime later this week but I’d just like some input, we’ve known that her teeth were bad and loose for some time now, but the gum thing is a new development ->

I see a bit of tooth sticking out her gums. Is this part of the root? O.o If so – I wonder if she somehow pulled it loose when she was younger (She always used to chew and pull on the bars of the cage when we walked by until I decided to let her out permanently) She seems to be doing ok – eating fine, pooping fine and relaxing ok. Shes just not eating hay a lot which I guess is due to the way her teeth are positioned. I’m guessing that this is also contributing to her runny eyes. Has anyone ever had a case where a bunny has been like this?

Other notes: The vet said that it wasn’t really necessary to pull her teeth out *just* yet as she seems to be keeping her weight quite stable over the past few vet checks *yay!*. Apparently I just need to get them trimmed every 4~6 weeks which is alright with me. I’ll go for a complete removal if it gets any worse than it is now. I’ve been keeping a close eye on it. The circled incisor (right) is a bit lower than the left one. The malocclusion is at its maximum now I believe – no change in a few weeks. Poor lops  having to go through so much.

I may be going crazy, but it looks to me like he has extra bottom insisors….
As long as she is eating/drinking/pooping, I would just wait and see what the vet says. That doesn’t look like a very nice position to have your teeth in.

Are the bottom teeth coming over the top teeth? It almost looks that way in the picture. Could the bottom teeth be jabbing the gums above the top teeth? It looks like the vet is just recommending having them clipped for now, which is good. Did they prescribe anything for the gums?

LBJ10 – yep the bottom teeth are growing over the top. They *might* be jabbing the gums, last time we went to the vet he didn’t prescribe anything as she looked to be having a stable weight (around 2.2kg ish for 3 times in a row -/+ 0.1kg ;D ) just that exposed area is a new development I haven’t really seen before. I sure hope she can keep her teeth. I love the bunny purr – its therapeutic. Maybe I might just ask him to clip off a bit more as she doesn’t have any other major teethy related problems – we’ll see by the end of the week when I get my vet check in. I’m already getting disapproving faces from the corner of the room and I didn’t even say anything yet!

Updates on teeth – hunch was on the mark, tooth was broken. In summary of vet visit, two loud cracks, tooth popped off, blood, teeth are straight. Now bunny will hate me for the rest of today, but thankfully we don’t need to do the full removal! Thanks everyone

Glad you figured it out. Keep in mind however that the teeth may grow back this way so you may need to take him to the vets for teeth trims occasionally.
Try some crasins to request forgiveness. Is he eating ok?

Oh yea – we expect them to grow back fully over time, hopefully normal. Ill be bringing her in every 4~6 weeks just for a trim too like I always have. The minute I got back she jumped out her little cage and started eating again (rocket and kale *what on earth is it with bunnies and kale), she was in slight pain (teeth grinding) but I think that was kind expected seeing as a tooth just got yanked out.

Edits: Just checked her teeth – they’re straightttttt omg its so nice and perfect. That huge bulb of swollen gum is gone too (where red arrow is pointing). She has a constant disapproving face, but I do think it was for the better to have that tooth pulled off. Treat spoil time.
