bunny suddenly died

My boyfriend and I were walking home when we saw a pet bunny hopping on the road about to get hit by a car. We ran over and picked him up and he was perfectly fine with being handled so we knew he was someone’s pet. We brought him home and went out to buy a cage. We bought rabbit food and hay. We had the bunny for a couple months when suddenly he passed away with no signs of why. I am usually home but this one occasion I was out for my dad’s birthday and came home to a dead bunny. The night before I had played with him and he was perfectly happy.
I have two cats who go outside so they sometimes can get a flea or two. I had put collars on them about 4 months ago (before having the bunny). They wore them for a couple months then I took them off and they have been sitting there. Two days before the bunnies death I saw one flea so I put the collars back on that night. The next day I let the cats outside and brought the bunny out of the cage. So no contact was made between the cats and bunny. Then the next day was the day I left and came home to him dead. I hope putting the flea collars back on my cats was not the cause of this. I am devastated and depressed over this and I will never live this down.
The collars were Hartz tick and flea collars for cats and kittens. The collars were about 4 months old and they had only been wearing them again for about a day and a half when the bunny died.
Is this why the bunny died? Also the bunny had white urine since the day we brought him in so idk if that could be the cause but I Google and it said they need hay and fresh water and greens which is what I was doing.
I would never put a flea collar for cats on a bunny I only put them on my cats and they were pretty old collars so they couldn’t have been strong. And the bunny didn’t play with the cats out of the cage while they had the collars on.
I hope I didn’t do anything wrong to kill the bunny.. I hope this was just a coincidence he died after I put the collars back on the cats.
Does anyone have any idea what happened?

I’m very sorry your bunny died. Bunnies are fragile and hide illness well. Sudden, unexpected deaths are sadly not all that uncommon.

I very much doubt the flea collars had anything to do with it. From what I can find, the fleacollar you used doesn’t contain Fipronil, an antiparasitics compound that is toxic to rabbits. But even if it had been Fipronil in the collars, direct contact would’ve been required.

I don’t think you caused your bun’s death in any way. It seems you cared excellently for him, and he was very lucky that you found him. White urine is normal for rabbits, they expel surplus calcium via their kidneys. Problem-urine is thick, almost like fine wet concrete. White urine that dries to a white powder is not a problem.

Sometimes a bun has a congenital heart condition, and you never see any symptoms until the bunny passes. In Europe and Australia there are viruses that can kill a bunny rapidly (RVHD viruses), bu if you’re not in Europe or Australia, that wouldn’t apply.

It seems you gave him a good life. I’m sorry you didn’t get to keep him longer.

I’m sorry about the loss of your bun. You did a good thing by rescuing him! And I’m sure he was happy that his last moments were spent in a loving home instead of out in a road.

He could have been sick from before you saved him. Rabbits are professionals at hiding illness and pain.

It sounds like you made his last few months great. No matter what caused his death, it sounds like he had a happy and loving last few months. That is what counts
