Bunny Sneezes?

Hello! My bunny is 8 months old she is a black lionhead 

To get Mac in her cage at night i lure her with a treat since she isn’t in there all day and isn’t accustomed, the treat i give her is Sunseed’s AnimalLovens Cookie (cranberry-orange flavor). I’ve been giving her these treats for about a month and a half now and she absolutely loves it. I only give her one a day and that is before bed.

Anyway last night when i gave it to her, i put it in her food bowl and as she ate it she sneezed twice, but i wasn’t really sure if it was really a sneeze and she had stopped after that anyway.

Tonight i gave her the cookie again and she sneezed about 5-7 times in a row and this time i was completely sure they were sneezes! after i put my hand in her cage to pet her she was fine and continued eating just fine.

Is this a very serious issue? Can she be allergic to the cookie? Does she have the sniffles? She is my first rabbit so I get nervous about everything and i don’t want my baby to get sick

The treats are mostly wheat, corn and sugar which isn’t the best for bunnies. Generally small bits of fruit or healthier and more appetizing to most bunnies (raisins or craisins). A lot of things marketed for bunnies aren’t very healthy for them. That said, I don’t think they are causing the sneezing.

Sneezing can be caused by many different things so if you haven’t been to a vet in a while a check up might be a good thing to do regardless.

Is there any discharge? One or two sneezes usually is not a big deal. It’s the more numerous ones in a row that can be a cause of concern if it continues. Sometimes it can even be a sign for dental issues and since this seems to happening when she’s given a cookie, it is something to keep your eyes on.

You also said she sneezed after you put your hand in the cage to give her a cookie. I know you related it to the cookie, but do you wear perfume/body lotions, or did you recently wash your hands with stronger scented soap? Sometimes these can be irritants to bunnies.

I do agree with Move Diagonally about choosing healthier treats, as well as seeking out a vet if you have concerns. Especially since this is your first bunny, it might be a good idea to get established with a rabbit-savvy vet now. (If you haven’t already)
