  Hi guys. I am looking for rabbit smell solutions. I use equine pellets and clean their litter boxes every day or every two days. The windows in the whole place are now almost always open since it is warm. But. The rabbit POOP smell is still there, to me at least. We all know that fresh poop smell they make lol and maybe it just lingers to me but I really want to get rid of it. I have been reading the forum posts about air fresheners and rabbits and have a question. I know air fresheners and incense and all that is bad, but I thought I read somewhere that lavender oil would be safe to use? Specifically, I read that someone suggested the best way to get rid of rabbit smell is just open windows and a few drops of lavender oil, placed on a cotton ball near a window. I already have 100% pure lavender essential oil and read that diluting it with witch hazel and water to make a natural air freshener. Would this be safe to use around the house with buns? If not, what is the best way to rid of that fresh poop smell?

  Well… I honestly don’t think I have ever smelled stinky bunny poop except cecotropes. I’m not convinced that bunny poop should smell. I’m nto sure if you are smelling uneaten cecotropes, or hormonal urine. Avalon’s urine smells diferent at different times of the year. Pungent when he gets hormonal spikes (he is neutered). The girls pee doesn’t smell that bad – just like regular pee. I dont’ think the poops smell. The cecotropes definitely do smell. Do you think it could be pee or cecotropes?

  My bunnys poop smells like hay, cecals smell but rabbits should be eating those, and their (all neutered) pee only smells if I leave their litter boxes dirty for more than 2 days. Hormonal rabbit pee is very loud and doesnt smell all that great. Are you sure its poop smell you are smelling?

  My bunny usually has no smell at all – until today when he covered himself in cecotrops – it’s seriously stinky in here now (I’ve literally opened the windows and turned the fan on which is no fun since it’s raining outside and only 15 celsius). Soon time for a bunny butt bath!

  I only ever smell my bunnies poop if I pick it up and sniff it lol I certainly can’t detect any scent otherwise.

  Ohhhh yes. I know its poop time from the other side of the room sometimes…. haven’t kept a diary to see when (or who) but some DEF smell MUCH stronger than others….
  I juggle the hay in the box around to cover them up… that helps.
  (I clean out twice a day already…..)

  Yes!!! I was starting to think I was crazy when everyone else said their buns’ poops didnt smell but when either bun comes up on the couch with me I know INSTANTLY when they poop just by the smell! not their cecotropes, just normal fresh poops.

  maybe thats what I’m smelling- hay. it def has a smell that I get a whiff of when they drop fresh ones around the house lol.

  It is their normal poop, not cecotropes. I’ll be on the couch, or anywhere really, and if they poop on the floor near me I can smell it. It does fade, but sometimes I feel like it lingers but that could totally be just me. It could just linger in my nose lol. I have not noticed the smell change with the veggies they get either.

  Unfortunately I can’t say I’v ever found an acceptable deodorizer that is natural, and I refuse to use chemical sprays. I think opening windows is good – but it’s only really effective if there is cross-ventilation. So one window won’t do, there needs to be another window open across the room, and a small fan to encourage air flow out the window is even better. Typically, ammonia in urine and protein in poop cause odor. I would imagine you could probably smell alfalfa poops more than timothy… what hay do they eat?
