Bunny pulls all the hay down from hay rack !

Hello Everyone, I’m a new bunny owner. Ive got 2 mini-lop buns which are giving me a big headache regarding them and the hay.

My 2 buns are inside a cage fitted with a hay rack (at the bottom of hayrack is the litter tray). Everytime when i fill the hay to the hay rack, both buns will keep pulling them all out which caused the hay to fall on the litter tray and they wont eat it but just pee on them ! So I removed the hay rack and place my hay in my litter tray (half side for hay and another half side for litter) but my buns will just dig up all the hay from the bottom and make a mess ! Is there anyway to prevent my bunnies from pulling all the hay down?

Also, it seems like both of my bunnies only eat the green soft part (the leaves) of the hay and not others! (im using oaten hay) but i saw a video from youtube from 2 bunny professionals, they said that the hard part of the hay is instead the healthier one for the bunnies. is there any way for me to get my buns to eat the hay and not be picky?

Well I don’t really like using hay racks because I feel my rabbits can only eat one strand of hay at a time. What I do for my bunnies is put a giant pile of hay next to the litterbox on a plate so they can sort of eat it from there. They also get hay in a veggie ball and in shoeboxes around their x-pen.

As for the oat hay problem, my rabbits absolutely LOVE oat hay and I used to feed them that too. I now get them a bale of timothy hay and I mix in differant types of hay (oat and orchard). Maybe you should try feeding your buns other types of hay such as timothy or orchard grass. Hay is the most important part of a rabbits diet so you need to make sure that they are eating at least their body size of it each day. You can also give them fresh grass (not the lawn mower clippings) as hay is dry grass.
