Bunny puberty questions

Hi,

These questions are a bit random sorry!

My bunny is about 7 months now and I just booked her in for her spay, for the last 3 weeks or so she has been acting differently, im assuming its because shes hit bunny puberty? She seems to be more fearful, running away from me, and more scatty like running back and forth in the cage and hitting on the side for no reason? she is also shaking the bars on her cage and throwing around the ledge in her cage, more destructive. 

Are these normal behaviours? Do you think her spay will reduce this somewhat?

Since she has chewed cables lately my partner has put her under cage (with a makeshift extension now too) arrest, has anyone got any advice and stopping this or any decent hard wire covers?

The moodiness would be hormone related. Chewing cables is a bunny thing and not likely hormone related even though it just started – if she’s going to be around cables and wires then you definitely want to bunny-proof.

There are a variety of tools out there to prevent bunnies from chewing through wires. Some people just put up gates/build barriers with NIC cubes. I find the greatest success and most esthetically pleasing way is to buy plastic tubing. It comes in a variety of diameters at hardware stores, I’ve bought them by them foot, and you slit them along one side, slip them over the wire and it closes on itself. I think there’s something less labor intensive out there if you Google around. The rabbits will still chew the tubing, but it’s rare that they can get all the way through it, though mine has come close. But he’s a big guy. It gets very frustrating to try and cover a huge number of wires behind video equipment, and some sort of barrier is likely easiest, but doesn’t look good, so my hubby won’t let me do that. Grumble grumble

Hard to say if the other behavior is hormonal or indignant that she’s under arrest. It’s time consuming, but I’ve resorted to watching my guy the whole time he’s out, which isn’t as nice as having a free range rabbit, but you can’t have the place destroyed/fire hazard. I do admit to throwing blankets/sheets over the wires to discourage mine from getting to uncovered wires. Of course, my bun grabs and rearranges and sometimes tries to chew through the sheet and it may not be the safest way to do this. Looks like heck, but hubby hasn’t complained. Go figure.
