I have a male bunny, he is around 5 years old. In the beginning I was a terrible owner and stuffed him in a small cage for hours a day. About a year ago I made him a small pen, about three feet by three feet. He has full range of that area and can even hop onto my bed with a step system I created. He has always chewed on the bars of his new pen, it’s quite annoying. He even tosses his pen around when he chews, like he is lifting it up to escape. I had ignored it and just made sure to put him in his smaller cage while I was away so he wouldn’t escape. I really wish I didn’t have to lock him up at all, but I can’t have him lifting up his pen to escape. His pen is about three feet high with no top on it, it’s just chicken wire in a square shape. Does anybody have any idea how to stop him from doing that? I want to keep the pen portable, so I don’t want to attach a bottom to it either.

How much ‘out’ time does he get? He may need more, and is telling you by chewing those bars.

If you buy a proper exercise pen (4 × 4), he shouldn’t be able to lift it up, unless he’s a hulk bunny. You can also put 2 pens together for when you have to lock him up.

An x-pen is a good idea, as Love4Bunny stated. They are portable and can even be folded up and placed against a wall when not in use. You really don’t want a rabbit chewing on chicken wire. It is thin and can be severed by their teeth, which could result in dangerous, jagged edges that could cut them or small pieces that they could swallow.

I am hoping to get an x-pen soon. I understand about the chicken wire and I always check to make sure its not jagged. I haven’t fond an x-pen to my liking because they are either too short, or too tall and he cant hop up on to my bed, that’s why I haven’t gotten one, I guess I can give up letting him hop on my bed by himself if that means he is safe.

One of the x-pens sold at drsfostersmith.com comes in 5 different heights, from 24″ to 48″.
