I have a 2 year old bunny named Bugz. He usually eats hay no problem, but I’ve noticed lately that he is refusing to eat it. I buy him Western Timothy hay. He’s still eating his pellets and other fruits and veggies that I give him. He’s still drinking water. It’s just the hay that he’s turning his nose up too. I bought a new bag of hay thinking the hay I had was stale but still nothing. I then bought a hay that had pineapple and papaya bits in it and he ate the fruit bits but not the hay. What should I do!?

I would have him checked out by a vet. Sometimes refusing to eat hay can be a sign of dental problems. The earlier something like that is caught, the better. It’s much easier to have a molar spur filed down than it is to treat a dental abscess and bone infection, which can happen if a tooth issue goes untreated.

If you are able to rule out a medical problem, there can be other reasons rabbits stop eating hay. Cutting back on pellets can encourage them to eat more hay. You can also try other varieties like orchard grass or oat hay.

How much pellets does he get? How much fruit and veggies? I had the same issue with my bunny but it was because i was overfeeding fruit and veggies.

I agree, if a bunny suddenly stops eating hay, it’s normally a tooth problem. Get him checked out by a bunny-savvy vet.
