My bunny, George passed away very suddenly this morning. I’m really not sure what happened and I’m worried about my other two bunnies who lived with him. I’m hoping someone with more experience might know what happened. I’m going to take the two I still have to the vet regardless, but I’d appreciate theories about what could have happened.
I came home from work last night very late and found him collapsed, sprawled out in the back of the cage. He could move all four limbs and his head, but couldn’t/wouldn’t stand up. He was able to eat and drink a little and responded to cuddles. I moved him into a carrier to seek emergency medical help this morning. I tried to be careful but he was in a hard to reach corner of the cage so I’m certain I jostled him in the process. He was only in the carrier for a few minutes before he had a seizure and passed.
The morning before I found him collapsed, he had been eating and moving completely normally. He was a 5 year old house rabbit who lived in an air conditioned space (no possibility of heat stroke). He lost weight over the last few months, but his weight tended to fluctuate, so I didn’t worry too much about it. He’d had an extended period of sneezing a lot during the summer/fall but the vet thought it was allergies and it cleared up when winter came.
The other two are acting, eating, pooping completely normal. Neither of them have lost any weight in recent times. But I have no idea if they could have whatever killed George and I can’t lose all three of them.
