Hello my vet told me Shooky needed to gain more weight for her to get spayed. Shooky is a 4 month Holland lop. It’s crazy how she is underweight but she eats so much everyday. I want to know how I could help her gain weight in a healthy way. (I’m going to the vet in a month to check is she is doing well.)

What is her current weight and diet like?

If she’s eating a lot but not gaining weight, there could be an underlying issue. Did any behaviour change? How is her poop and pee?

You could try increasing her pellet intake but do look out for excess cecotropes too.

You can purchase Critical Care (apple and banana flavor usually is more appetizing for the rabbits) and feed this to your rabbit, in addition to all other food. This is how Wick’s vet recommended me get him from underweight to a healthier weight.

Critical Care is usually used to help nourish rabbits recovering from a procedure (like a spay), so it’s nutritionally ok to give, even if your rabbit isn’t necessarily in recovery.

For Wick, I fed him as many syringes of Critical Care that he would want, twice a day (morning and night). I still gave him his usual veggies and pellets on top of that (at different times). You just need to be mindful that there’s a lot of time that your rabbit has to eat hay as well.

I think shooky is 1 pound and yesterday she didn’t pee as much and today she didn’t poop the whole morning. She gets a lot of hay to eat some vegetables and some pallets. I’m scared that the hernia she has is causing this.
