Most of ours were probably already named when we adopted them from the shelter, but I was just wondering what type of name do you prefer for house rabbits?
I named mine Oxo and Bisto, which are actually brands of gravy. I believe some members on here do not approve of the humour, but hey – they couldn’t be called anything else now.
All the other pets I’ve ever named have had human names though.
Mine have animal names… Monkey, Moose and well.. Smudge. But I call her Smudge Bug ![]()
Mine have weird pet names. But so do some celebrities kids! ie: sparrow
All my ostriches had human names though. Like Arnold, Madonna, lilly, Elle, Mozart etc.
I voted option 3. Depends on the bun and what seems to fit. Mine have food connection names. With another pair I would likely name some good old fashioned people names that I like.
@Grumpybun, I didn’t even pick up on the gravy connection. lol Often when I read Oxo and Bisto I automatically think Pepto Bismol
Oh, Katherine, you have ostriches? LOL!
I voted for 2. Pet names… BUT my bunny is named after a Japanese tea beverage, Koucha. Affectionately called Chacha most of the time ![]()
I love human names for pets. I want strangers to not know if I’m talking about a human family member or a furry family member.
whatever fits :p I have one of each, Jenny is a people name, but it just suits her. and Peepers..most certainly not a people name lol but for her it fits..I had name ideas before and when my mom picked her up, she said the only name she could “see” was Peepers. my old girl had a people name…sort of….Kari(CAR-ee NOT carrie), which is what her name became, she was actually originally named caramel..not a people name lol however over time she simpley morphed into Kari instead, which is a people name, in both pronouciations of as Car-ee and carrie lol.
I go for any nqame that suits for all my animals..I have gerbils name Fredrick, Elizabeth, Chelsey, Penny, Jorden, Morgan and Malcolm for example, I also have gerbils name Spook, Munchkin, MiniMunch, Solar, Mimas, Bilby, Schorl etc… as long as it “fits” I dont care if its a people or other type name, heck I dont even care if its a “name” at all, I only care if it sounds like it could be lol
I like people names for all my pets, because to me they’re members of the family! My exception to that has been Ringo, who had those lovely rings on his tail when he was a kitten, and Carbun who came with his name. Also, like Beka, I like to be able to confuse people with the names. In fact if I’m home alone and someone comes to the door when I’m not expecting anyone I’ll sometimes yell something like “Harley hang on I’ll be right there, there’s someone at the door!” so that it sounds like there’s some guy here and not like I’m alone.

Ummm….you did use my bunny’s first name, Samantha, in your example, so it was kind of hard to vote.
But I considered Bunnykins and my mother loved that immediately, so when I chose Samantha she had to have a double first name, southern style, so she’s Samantha Bunnykins.
I had a lot of trouble finding a name I liked ahead of finding Spockie. But my nephews picked him out for me, and one nephew said “you can call him whatever you want but I am calling him Spock. (Human? vulcan? both.) Other nephew piped up and said “I’m calling him J. S. Spock (all you classical music lovers). So I guess they’re really named for humans, but I still think it depends on the bunny.
Years ago I named a cat Lambchop – for the puppet not the food – and it was kind of like naming a sumo wrestler Pixie. Not the best fit.
There was a member that posted a while back that had 2 rabbits named This and That.
This n that how funny.
Eddie was originally named George. I’ve always liked George as a name for a pet. But it didn’t suit him. I was watching a rerun of Frasier and the dog on there is named Eddie. And that seemed to fit him!
Lollipop was such a sweet little girl. She still is! So I had to have a sweet name for her! I originally named her Tootsie after Tootsie rolls. But I didn’t like it to well so I changed it to Lollipop. Turns out I should’ve left it cause she resembles a tootsie roll now! hahaha
But it just depends on the pet and their personality. Although I do tend to stay away from typical pet names like Fluffy or Fido, etc. Nothing wrong with them, just don’t care for them. lol
I’m all about the people names! I especially like using slightly unusual names that I love, but don’t love enough to use on future children. For example, I’ve recently had pets named Rory, Oliver, Sebastian, Rowan, Otto, and Hannah.
@ Jerseygirl – just had to google pepto bismol, never heard of it! I think it’s the same as gaviscon over here. I have wondered how many people here get the gravy thing – do they supply the US for example? If not, where on earth do members think I’ve got these names from?
And Elrohwen – you have the most fantastic taste in names! If I ever discover I’m expecting a child I may ask you for suggestions, lol.
I like “human” names for my pets. Jack, Karl, Molly and Freddie. It says it all
I read an article once on the subject that said that previously we always named our pets “animal names” eg. dogs were always named King, Spot et.c because we kept a slight distance to them. They were animals. Today, people name their pets human names, because we consider them part of the family. We have them in our couches and live with them side by side.
I have always wanted a cat named Kismet (the unavoidable destiny) and if I get a female bunny in the future her name will be Asti (after the drink). So I am not sure what that means.
our names are kinda like cooking spagetthi, throw them out and see what sticks.
Pringles, son’s choice for our first bun (yes, after the chips and she/he changed gender several times)
Daisy, sweet and shy, it just stuck even though he turned out to be a boy
Toby, solid black and too cute for a Severus so we chose the elder Snape name
Lola, came that way and fits to a t
Hershy, ditto
Simba, came to me as Bunny, Mr. Rabbit, Simba, Here Boy. I liked Simba because of the lion mane
Charlie, the kid that found him asked that I name him that. Has since been changed to Dammitcharlie

Haha, sure! I actually have a whole list of male names from when we got Otto and I’ve had a few friends say that it gave them possible names for future kids
I’m not so good with the female names though! Hannah was the obvious choice, since Otto is a palindrome (and there was a children’s story called ”Hannah is a Palindrome” that I remember reading in school). I did have gerbils named Daphne and Emma for a while, and now I’m kicking myself because Emma is my favorite baby name and I don’t think I can reuse a name I already used on a gerbil ![]()

This explanation makes a lot of sense! I don’t think you would’ve caught many people choosing elaborate human names for pets 30 or 50 years ago.
