The rabbits talked about on this site have so many interesting names. So where’d they come from?
When I got Lily I was with my ex-boyfriend, and he was insisting on a name from Harry Potter. We both figured that Luna Lovegood and Lily Potter were cool characters with pretty names. She was almost Luna, I decided that she looked more like a Lily.
So share your bunny’s name origin if you like.
Dexter and Penny came with their names. They named Dexter after the TV show character because he’s kind of a creeper. Lol. Penny I’m assuming was named because she’s orange. She came in to the rescue with another bunny named Peso.
Monty aka the rabbit of caerbannog was named after Monty Python because of the bunny character in the Holy Grail movie.
Helo was named after the character in Battlestar Galactica.
Inara was named after the character in Firefly.
Dogs: Bandit & Outlaw… my sister is a cop, she named her dog Justice. I thought it was funny that our dog names kinda underlined our personalities a bit. (I’m known to be a bit of a rule breaker) I -almost- got 2 rabbits initially, planned to name them Bonnie and Clyde. But just ended up getting the one, so named him Bumpy (after gangster Bumpy Johnson).
Bonnie and Clyde still rumbles around in my mind… I might have to acquire 2 more rabbits….
Great thread idea! MD I love Monty Python and the Holy Grail so much! That’s awesome.
I had a bunch of names picked out when I went to get my bun.I had actually picked out another bunny from the same litter (white with grey spots over his eyes)but while I was waiting for them to sort paperwork I changed my mind and decided on my little guy. I decided to call him Rupert. While I was driving home with him, he was sitting in a box on my friends lap and I stopped at a red light. He stood up on his back legs and poked his head over the top to look at me and I just said “Hi Rufus! You definitely have to be called Rufus!” I just thought it really suited him ![]()
I decided to name my first rabbit Mr. Usagi (rabbit) Bunny Bun Buns. It was super silly. I just call him Usagi which of course is japanese for rabbit.
Kilala is a character from an anime called Inuyasha. Its actually spelled Kirara but pronounced Kilala. I thought it was a pretty and cute name for either a cat or bunny.
Apollo was named by the wonderful members on here. Something to do with him being so small I think, I don’t remember. But he’s my baby, the name has grown on me! ![]()
Great thread! I think that’s soo funny about the Holy Grail. I’d never heard of the movie until I went to a doctor and had a really deep scratch on my face from a crazy rabbit and the doctor started asking me if it was the white rabbit from the “Holy Grail”. When he saw I had no idea what he was talking about, he started imitating the scene from the movie, then poked his head out and asked the nurse if she knew the movie. It was so crazy I later wrote to the doctor and told him if he ever opened up a private practice nearby, to let me know.l’d definitely want him for a doctor!!!!!!!!!
I mostly go with what sounds good, but I named Jane after a 4th grader in a class I worked in. She’s just a great kid who everyone loves, and last year, when I was looking at this giant stray bunny on line at the shelter (whom they’d named Natalie…huh?) I showed Jane the picture of her and said if I get that rabbit I’m going to name her Jane because I love her a I love her name. Jane was so excited! Now I’m sure that’s going through both our minds every time we see each other in the halls this year. I’m an aide, so I can be a bit crazy. The kids love it anyway.
Love these stories!
My buns are simply named after characters from my favourite children’s film, The Tale of the Bunny Picnic – take a look at the story if you’ve never heard of it! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tale_of_the_Bunny_Picnic
I name my pets names I would have used for kids names – If I was to ever get another pet (NOOOOO!), I would call it Steve/Stevie.
I try to pass on my name suggestions to my kids, and they respond with “no, you keep the name mum, you never know, you may want a gold fish one day”????
Leo was going to be Simba but other people changed my mind. He is named after the Ninja Turtle Leonardo. Lola is named after Lola rabbit. I used to have a rabbit named Lyra from the Golden Compass books. I love the name Lyra. I also have a cat named Luna after Luna Lovegood, she lives with my mom. My brother has a cat named Percy after one of Dumbledore’s middle names (Percival) as opposed to Percy Weasley.
Ha, think I’ll start with all the mammalian names (Cats, Ferrets and Rabbits… I’ll leave the fish out of it for now)
Right, cats – Pixie: my wife named, Bubblegum: Already had the name when we adopted him, Aryll: A character from the Legend of Zelda game.
Ferrets – Shovel and Shush: Sisters I named them according to their behaviour. Shovel digs at anything and everything and Shush makes a really strange sound when she’s annoyed, Bowser: Mario Bros villain.
Rabbits – Zelda: Bun we lost a few months ago, Link: Zelda’s companion, Navi: the companion we got for Link when we thought he was ready to be bonded again, and Daisy: the new addition.
I’m a student of games design and development and computer animation, so the geeky game related names make sense… Except it’s my wife that’s named all our animals (Except Shovel and Shush, they pre-date the marriage…)
The had a ton of rescue goldfish we had named, too.
Chas, Dave, Sam, Dean, Castie… and two more, but I can’t, for the life of me remember their names…
We only had them a wee while until they could be rehomed somewhere more suitable.
And now we have a tropical tank with the fish all named collectively by species…
We have five Balloon Mollies all called Bob, six Black Widow Tetra all called Kevin, a male Dwarf Gourami called Leslie, three clown loaches, as yet un-named and a common pleco called Doug.
*ahem*
*EDIT*
I realise the topic was “Bunny Names” but I couldn’t leave out the rest of the household…
LOL Retro.. love the collective naming <3
AndHenry, I’ve considered just the opposite. My daughter and her boyfriend are pretty serious, and he said he wants to name his first son, well, I won’t say in case I offend anyone.
Anyway, I thought about naming one of my rabbits that so he’d then think he couldn’t use the name for my grandchild!
Ashe is from League of Legends. Her name fits her personality perfectly.
Moogle got his name because I was playing Final Fantasy: A Realm Reborn at the time. I thought he was cute like a Moogle ( fuzzy, white, winged creatures).
Leopold is named after Butters in South Park because my husband just liked that name (he calls him Leopold Bunners). Wooly is short for Mister Wooly, but my husband insists his “real” name is Sweaters. I think the name is self explanatory since he’s a Jersey wooly.
Note: When my husband doesn’t approve of a pet name, he will just start calling them whatever he wants their name to be. It hasn’t stuck with Wooly though. =p
Tank because he’s large and Mulder and Scully are from the X files and Pudd because he’s just… idk if you could hold him it would make sense
Luna was called Albus until the vet said she’s a girl. (Typical, I know!) ![]()
I loved the name Albus. I do love Harry Potter but I wasn’t trying to go for HP themed names, I just thought Albus was a great name for a bunny.
![]()
So when we realised she was a girl, we toyed around with a few names, and to be honest I don’t love the name Luna as much as I loved Albus but it stuck.
We call her Loony or Loony Tunes most of the time anyway! ![]()
