Dasher has been making a coughing noise today and when I get close to her it sounds like when someone has a scratchy throat. When she moves around or hops it sounds like she is going to spit up something. She’s been choking more than usual today so I wonder if she could have gotten food in her lungs. Does anyone know what this might be?

She might have something stuck at the back of her throat. It’s best to take her to a vet and get it checked out.

Ok I’ll take her to the vet but I’m just wondering how serious this is.

It can be quite serious if she has aspirated something into her airways. That would need to be cleared and a course of antibiotics be given to get ahead of any potential infection that could lead to pneumonia.

ETA: If you can, try take a little bit of video of her doing this so you can show the vet.

I agree with Jerseygirl. Aspiration of a foreign object (food) can lead to aspiration pneumonia.

Thank you guys. She had something wrong in her throat since February causing her to choke that couldn’t be fixed. I guess it was just a matter of time before it killed her.
