Bunny Keeps Peeing Slighty Out of Litterbox

My Bunny’s litterbox is in the corner of his cage. Sometimes when he goes to pee, he pees in the corner of the liter box where there is some space. This causes him to “miss” the litterbox. Any suggestions on what to do?

This used to happen with Wilson, but it was simply because his litterbox wasn’t fitting his cage correctly. I had to think out of the box to get him a new litterbox to help him out…what are you using right now for his box?

Maybe the box is too small. Is his litter box big enough for him to lay down in? That’s the suggested size.

I also recommend a larger litter box with taller sides. Look into a cat litter box instead or a storage container for a litter box, buns like to have plenty of room and it’s quite common for them to hang their butt over the edge to pee if the box is too small.

Oh ok this makes sense as his litter boxes corners are curved making the space as I had said, I will look into getting a litter box with “squared corners and taller walls”

Also Bon has been doing this thing as heard in the video and I’m just wondering if I should be worried about it because he is eating fine, pooping fine, sleeping fine, playing fine, and acting like himself. But my paranoid self just want to confirm this is ok. If the video did not work the noise is almost like Bon licking his lips/ “chewing” but not grinding his teeth. Almost like he’s licking his teeth?? I don’t know how to describe it. But again no signs of pain or illness.

I can’t see the video, but it could be tooth purring. Tooth purring is a sign of contentment, whereas tooth grinding is a sign of pain. Or, when he makes the noise does his mouth move as if he is chewing on something? He could be eating a cecal.

He could be maneuvering around saliva to lubricate his mouth because his teeth are irritating him. Wick does this often.

Yes it’s almost like he’s chewing something I guess. What is a cecal?

A cecal is the softer poos that look like a tiny bundle of grapes. Bunnies will eat them for the extra nutrients they provide.

If you can get close while he’s chewing, you can probably smell the equivalent of dog poop if he’s eating a cecal. They smell very potent, unlike normal rabbit poop. Ew.

is there anything i need to do about the saliva thing? Dont know if you saw my reply before. I dont think he is eating a cecal

No I didn’t see that detail! If there’s salivation, I’d take him to a vet to have his teeth check. It sounds like lubrication to try and soothe a sore mouth from dental discomfort/pain.

So is there any way to check for the saliva or is it a guessing game?

i started litter box training him about 1 wk ++ ago..he managed to learn to pee in the litter box within 2-3 days..but..it only last for 2 days..now he often pee at the outside corner of the litter box
Any advise to toilet train him??
and i still couldnt get him to poo only in the litter box

@MyBunBun – sorry I thought I replied to this! This can be checked by a vet using an otoscope to look into the back of the mouth. Wick’s vet says they see a lot of bubbles, and that means excessive salivation. I recommend a veterinarian trained for rabbits to examine it formally.

@missyprincess – Sorry to hear of your struggles! It would be best to make your own topic to get some responses from BB members. Know that not every rabbit picks up on litter box usage naturally (Wick definitely did not), so training, sometimes more involved training is needed. If he’s in the box while he’s peeing outside of it, I recommend getting a high-wall litter box. Rabbits won’t really think of where their pee lands, but he probably believes it’s in the litterbox because he’s sitting in it. So to him, he’s being good, although his pee stream thinks otherwise.
