Hi all! I have a 2 year old Dutch bunny named Oreo who was doing perfectly fine last week. On Sunday night my husband and I heard him make a big fuss under our bed. We checked and noticed he was just flopping. Later that day I saw him have a seizure. His leg went stiff and he started freaking out and running around. This happened once more about a couple hours later and that’s when he couldn’t stand up anymore. There were no emergency vets that could see rabbits open at that time. The next morning(Monday) I took him to a rabbit specialist vet. They took blood test and put him in 4 types of medicine. Baytril, metacam, lactulose and benebac probiotics. It is now Thursday and my rabbit is only becoming worse. He can not keep balance and falls over. He is also very twitchy. I have been giving him critical care and water. My vet has not been able to call me back and I have been in search of another one. I don’t want to put him down but I don’t know what else to do at this point. I spent around $1200 at the vet and could not afford to go back for extensive care at this time. I could only take him back for a physical and a couple meds.

Has anyone ever expierenved this? Please help!

We are not vets, so we cannot diagnose your bunny. That being said, the symptoms could be caused by e cuniculi. I urge you to take your bunny back to the vet. Antibiotics are not effective since this is a protozoan. You will need a different kind of medication if this is what your bunny has. Your bunny will not get better without treatment. Here is an article about treating e cuniculi: http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/Neurology/cuniculi/pyrimethamine.htm

I’m also curious about the blood tests. Was your bunny tested for this? It’s a separate test, I believe they have to do a titer.

Other possibilities could include exposure to toxins. Could your bunny have come into contact with anything?
