For the past few days I’ve noticed a big increase in the amount of water Remi drinks, which in turn makes him pee ALOT. He has a large cat litter box and we use equine pellet bedding for litter. The pellets “fluff up” when wet so it is quite easy to see how much urine he is leaving in the box. I have to completely dump the box twice a day and refill – the entire thing is practically “fluff” so it’s not easy to just scoop out the soiled parts. It is quite hot here but he is housed in our finished basement, which stays pretty comfortable and cool. It’s where we hang out a good bit of our time and I wouldn’t spend time somewhere that is uncomfortably warm, trust me!
The only other change has been cutting back on his pellets – I was told by the breeder he could eat unlimited but he was having some soft stools so I cut him back to about 1/8 cup so he’d eat more hay. Could the outside temperature (even though it is comfortable inside) and the decrease in pellets be reasons why he is drinking and urinating so much? Or is it normal to have to dump the litter box twice daily and for him to go through two bowls of water a day? He goes to the vet Thursday for his neuter so I will most certainly mention it to the vet but wanted to get some opinions in the meanwhile. He seems okay otherwise – eating, playing, interacting, etc.
