My 1yr old rabbit Zorro that I’ve had for a year started shaking his head and scratching his ears a lot the past few days. Enough for me to notice something was up and not normal. So I checked in his ear and there was a little, and I mean little, amount of a light smear of blood across his inner ear. And his other ear has light brown spots down in the ear, almost looks dirty but I’m not so sure that’s what it is. I checked the next day and the blood was the same, I tried to clean it and see exactly where it had come from with no luck. The next day the blood was gone and there was a scab in its place. I googled ear mites and the images are such extream cases so hard to compare. I found one pic that looked similar to what my baby Zorro has. I’ll attach some pics of each ear. I would like to know what it is, cause if it’s just a scab from scratching, and dirty ears, I don’t wanna take an expensive, traumatizing visit to the vet. And if I decide I need to go in, then maybe any info I could get first would ease my mind. I hate seeing my baby in discomfort! Thank you in advance so much for your input! FYI the picture of the ear with the brown spots isn’t that great of a pic, it was hard to get a pic of inside his sensitive ear. And the spots are so far down they aren’t easy to see, lol.

Sounds like earmites. I would suggest a vet visit for some drops.
I don’t think a vet visit to get Revolution (selamectin, treatment for ear mites) would be very expensive. You can always call and ask for an estimate. Revolution is pretty standard for all types of mites.
Your pix are not showing. To upload pics, press edit. Then the arrow at the far right of Attachments. Then you can choose a pic, upload it and insert as image. The pic must be less than 500 Kb. Then you press submit and voilà ![]()
Pictures were uploaded, but not inserted into the post. I fixed it. ![]()
What are we looking at in the second picture? It almost looks like a fleshy growth, like a papilloma, but it’s hard to tell.
OK, thank you all so much for your quick responses! I am a new member of this site and this is my first post so sorry about the pix not showing up :-/ thought I followed the prompts, even made sure they were less than 500kb, lol. So I’ll have to figure that out. And thanx for fixing the pix LBJ10! I’m not sure if inserting the pix was something that I could have done or not..? But like I stated I’m new so bare with me, lol. Anyway, so the second pic at the bottom, is the ear that started with just blood the first day, no marks that I could see. Then the next day it was that bubbled up scab looking thing in the pic. Wasn’t sure if it was a scab from him scratching so much, or if mites can look like that..? And the fact he’s scratching so much is making me wonder too.. But it sounds like I should just get him in the vet, which is what I figured. Better to be safe than sorry! Thanx again guys!
Also, I have found some home remedies online for treating rabbit ear mites. Now, I have mixed feelings about this because I would never wanna make his ears worse or hurt him. Have any of you tried any home remidies for ear mites successfully or otherwise? Thanx!
You uploaded them successfully, but you have to click the icon next to the file names after they have been uploaded in order to insert them into the post. D knon’t feel bad though, uploading pictures gives a lot of people trouble.
You know, getting some Revolution certainly would not hurt anything. You have to get it from a vet here in the US, so you would probably need an appointment if your bunny hasn’t been seen by them yet.
Oh ok, thank you! Hopefully I’ll get the pictures down next time, lol. Ok well I’ve been researching rabbit vets like crazy, won’t trust my baby to just anyone! I’ve been wanting to get him in anyways for a check up since I got him, I’m just unemployment at the moment so it’s hard. But now that he requires a visit, I’ll get him in asap. Thanx! ☺
I would think the most expensive thing would be the office visit itself. My vet charges like $40 for an office visit for a “new” problem. I’ve heard office visit fees can vary wildly around the country though. If it’s mites, then the vet will prescribe something like Intervectin or Revolution. I know you’re looking for a good, rabbit-savvy vet but I still want to mention that you cannot use Frontline on rabbits. If the vet tries to use it then they don’t know what they’re doing.
Oh ok, thank you! That is very helpful info. I’ll keep that in mind and if the vet tries to use Frontline I’ll run out the door! Lol. And ok $40 isn’t bad! Hopefully it’s a similar story for me. I also need to buy a pet carrier to bring him in so I’ve been looking locally for one. Anyways I’m getting him in this week so hopfully it goes well! Thank you so much! ![]()
Good luck at the vet ![]()
Thanx again everyone for your help! So just to update everyone, I took Zorro to our first vet visit (I don’t know who was more anxious, me or Zorro, lol, I think we were both shaking) and he got a clean bill of health! One ear just had a scratch/scab, and the other ear was just dirty, and she (the vet) said I can just clean it with a damp cloth. She also said that the shaking off his head and scratching his ears, was nothing to worry about, it was just a coincidence. I was also told Zorro was beautiful and well behaved and a sweetheart, and that whatever I’m doing must be right! ? Can’t lie, it felt really good to be told I’m a good momma by the vet, lol! And I’m really relieved he finally got his yearly and EVERYTHING is ok and healthy!! ?
That’s great! Glad to hear he’s doing good. ![]()
