I had recently put theo into a new area. Same cage, but it is extended with xpens. It is in one of our small utility rooms.

It has been about a week and a half since we moved her, but I noticed she has gained some pounds. Is it because she was never comfortable to roam around the area? Did her shyness lead to her being too inactive? And if so, what can I do?

She ran to me at the other side of the xpen for the first time yesterday. Can I trust she will lose the weight now since she is comfortable playing in the big area?

First of all you should look at diet. did anything change ie. more treats, more pellets, different hay, alfalfa?

how much weight has she gained?

I haven’t put her on the scale yet, but I can tell by how she looks that she has gained some weight. And nothing big has changed. I am giving her the same hay, same pellets, and fed her the same treats to try to get her out of the cage. (banana bits)

Hmmm… I would believe hard facts. Put her on the scale before being too worried. Then if she’s still within normal weight for her breed calmly monitor the situation.

With unlimited hay Theo will never be hungry… Sometimes if I have to use too many treats (nail clipping) I cut down the pellets a touch that day, kinda like balancing a calorie count. Or I transitioned into using pellets AS treats, I would measure out the daily ration of pellets and set some aside for use as treats.

Food for thought: Sometimes body shape changes a bit when bunnies get more play space. They get a chance to flex their mad binky powers ;D and see gains in the muscle department.

                I agree with the scale…
