Hi guys its Olly Rabbit here, my Mummy came to clean my litter tray in my man cave, I got into my bed because Mummy always gives me kisses and cuddles when I go there, Mummy noticed that today I had one eye closed and one open like a cat does, Mummy is wondering if it is the same things cats do, sleep with one eye closed looking out for danger with the other, or in my case, looking out for if Mummy loses her balance and I have to move quickly?

Kurotta sometimes has one eye almost fully closed while the other wide open when he’s lounging. Does Mummy know if Olly’s eye is tightly shut or does it have any discharge?

Hi Kurottabun, Olly is medically OK, no discharge in his eye, usually he has both eyes closed, but I’m almost blind and I think he was worried in case I fell over again like earlier, I have noticed if I’m sat down he closes both eyes.

Rabbit eyes are on the sides of the head, so they see two different fields of vision as compared to humans. With that comes different sense of light, so it’s common for one eye to be more open than another!

I agree with the others responses… it is very normal that Buns sleep or snooz with one eye open to keep somewhat alert of danger, even while sleeping! And as far as whether he is sleeping that way to keep a watchful eye on mummy dear, it would not be the first time our beloved fur babies became in tune with our health needs and concerns! Animals keep teaching us about their incredible senses and abilities all the time, they are so profound!
