My bunny Lily was spayed a week and a half ago. She wont come out of her cage and runs to the back when i try to get her out. I don’t have a spare carrier to use to let her hop into instead of picking her up. She has been acting like this for a very long time. What should i do?

While people say you shouldn’t pick your rabbits up against their will, there are times where you simply need to pick them up for their own good. Checking that a spay incision is healing okay is one of those times.

Has she gone back to eating normally yet?

She is eating normal and climbs on the side of the cage when I walk by. As soon as I open the door she runs to the back

How long time has she been doing this for? If it started with her spay it could be related to the hormonal fluctuations that a spay gives rise to.

If she’s been doing it for longer I think I’d just give her time. Maybe place something yummy right outside the door-opening. And don’t grab her the second she comes out, because that way hopping out of the cage means sth unpleasant is about to happen.

I’m not clear on whether you just want to pick her up in general, or if you still need to check the spay site?

If it’s general, just leave the cage open and let her come to you then give her a treat. If it’s medical, you’ll have to lean in and grab her eventually.

I try to only pick her up when it is nessecary. I have to pick her up to check the incision, trim nails, and get her out of the cage for play time or for me to clean it. Since I don’t have a carrier available I use a stroller that is made for dogs. They both like riding in the stroller and being able to look around. I have to pick her up to set her in the stroller. I use the stroller to move her from the cage to her x pen or where ever I will be playing with her. I try to get her to come to me but she won’t. I don’t know how to move her around without having to pick her up. This has been going on since before the spay. Multiple times a day I walk over and just give her a treat and then leave. Sometimes I pet her when I do this. I have tried that because I don’t want her to see me and think something bad will happen. Normally I pet her for a minute before I pick her up
