I have two rabbits, named Bucky and Luna. I have worked hard to bond them, and even paid 308$ to spay Luna. Everything seemed awesome for awhile. I had stoped chasing them around, which paid off with bunny love from Bucky big time, and have gain trust with Luna, who is an escapee artist, and is always getting into trouble. Bucky loves to be pet. Stroked on his back, scrubbed on his forehead, massaged on his face, you name it. But Luna, ever since I got her, has always shrunk away from me. I thought this was because I was chaseing her, so I stoped, and haven’t for months. Then I thought it was because she doesn’t trust me. So I started hand feeding her, and she is now eating tiny bits of carrots from my hand. But still everytime I pet her, she puts her head on the ground, and kind of sticks her butt up. Is this because she doesn’t like being pet, or is this her sign of likeing it? I have tried several ways to pet her, scrub on her forehead: no. Stroke on the back: no. Stroke on the head: she puts her head down and her butt up. Does Luna just not like being pet? Should I give up and leave her be? Or am I doing something wrong, and if so please tell me what it is. I don’t picked her or Bucky up, unless it’s necessary, they have play time, they get fresh food every night, but Luna still, and this is what I think, doesn’t trust me enough to let me pet her. Please help me figure out what to do.

Head on ground is a sign of wanting to be pet. If you observe bonded rabbits, a rabbit will often shove it’s head on the ground right next to the other rabbit to say, hey, groom me!

That being said, there are many rabbits who actually do not enjoy being pet by humans, and there are many that it takes a long time to develop trust (months, years). Continue to give her space when you perceive she wants it, but seeing that she is ducking her head down is a good sign.

Give it time and try to do whatever they seem to like, they get to choose how they’re petted really, we just give it to them and make them feel loved and happy.
