Bunny died suddenly?

So my family won a bunny at a fair a few months back.  I took her to the vet and he said she was about 4 months old or so.  I did a lot of research considering I thought we could have this animal potentially 10+ years.

She ate 1 bowl of organic romaine lettuce a day, pellets, and timothy hay at her disposal everyday.  I checked on her before I went to bed and she was fine, bouncing around, very herself.  She had plenty of space to run around. The next morning my husband called while I was out and regretted to tell me he went to get her out, thought she was alseep and she was dead.  She was laying on her side with her head cocked back.  When he picked her up, blood was around her mouth.

The day before I had given her a few carrot slice peelings, thinking slowly introducing a vegetable was good…then a few days before that she ate a rubberband.  I thought for sure I would know how she was doing within 2 days if it was going to affect her.  Was I wrong?  This was my first rabbit and my children are very sad but are handling it well. I did not get an autopsy and am not looking for anything definitive, but if ya’ll can shed some light I would be greatfull.  Thanks!

She was in our basement which is finished, and cool but not at all cold.  It’s rather comfortable down there, and she was away from startling noises at night form my kids, hot weather, and everything else throughout the night.  She pooped ALOT.  I had to clean her litter pan constantly.  Almsot everyday if not more.  It all looked like normal pellets.  I used “Yesterday’s News Litter as reccomnede by a few members on here.  I didn’t have her very long so I’m a little shocked more than anything.

Oh, I’m so sorry about your rabbit. The truth is you cannot really know for sure unless you do a necropsy. It could be so many things.

I am so sorry to hear that. I can understand that, we have six buns in our house ranging from 5 years old to 4 months old. Wel a few months back we got 2 buns from a pet shop cause they were so sicly looking we couldn’t leave them there. well Baby the female has gone from 1/2 a pound to almost 4 now and healthy as can be. Her brother was doing well for about three weeks and we left to go to walmart he was acting normal. when we got back he passed, which couldn’t have been very long casue his body was still warm. the vet did an autopsy, but had no clue what happened. it was very hard on baby and our Flemmie Blue supported her and they are unseperable now. Sometimes things like these happen and you just never know why. My heart goes out to you.

Some bunnies died from distorted genetic so sometimes there’s nothing you can do about it.

I am so sorry about your loss. I also had a rabbit die suddenly too. It’s very difficult to figure out exactly what went wrong sometimes unfortunately , there could be so many things that happened.

I’m very sorry to hear this. Like the others said, it may have been something genetic. It doesn’t sound like you did anything wrong.

I’m very sorry for your loss. The only thing that gives me pause is the eating of the rubber band. That may have been indigestible, and rather than being passed, have contributed to her passing. Bunnies have very skittish digestive tracts, and often show no distress until it’s too late, so she may have been weakened physically to begin with. Without a necropsy you can’t be sure. Even if it was a factor, they are so quick that you couldn’t prevent her eating it in time to stop her, so you can’t blame yourself.

Perhaps you would like to rescue a bunny from a shelter and try again someday. You obviously learned about how to make a nice life for a bunny, and they are great pets. You gave this one a loving home.

I’m so sorry for your loss.  It sounds like she had a good life.  I too have lost a few bunnies unexpectedly.  The problem w/ rabbits is that they seldom show symptoms until it is too late.  W/o the Necropsy, you will likely never know for sure.  Overall it sounds like he had a healthy diet & lifestyle.  I had one rabbit die of pneumonia.  We had no idea she was even sick, never showed any signs acted like her regular rowdy self.  I had another little guy that died a few days post neuter.  He had a prolapsed intestine, which is extremely rare in rabbits and the only case that my bunny vet had ever seen.  No idea how that happened.  She believes it was likely something genetic that caused a defective intestine or something.

So sometimes you don’t know and it just sucks!  All my best to you and your family during this difficult time.  Pls do not blame yourself, you gave him a very good life, even for just a short period of time.
