I discovered today the water bottle for our rabbit (from Netherland Dwarf parents but looks very much like a Jersey Wooly), emptied most likely some time yesterday afternoon and was not refilled when it should have been. I won’t go into how this happened because I did a lot of yelling when I discovered it today at 4pm.

He is very happy to have water now and he never stopped eating, but after I watched my last little guy pass traumatically from GI stasis, I’m not sure what to look out for. Is he okay now that he has water and is happily peeing and pooing away in his box? Could something insidious still happen? I’ve done some searching online, but it really isn’t helpful.

Just wondering if I should call the vet in the morning and ask if there is some sign that all might not be okay.

        Thanks!

As long as he’s pooping, peeing, eating & drinking, I think he’ll be ok. You may want to just keep a close eye on him. If you feel like it’s necessary, you can call your vet, but I don’t think it would be as long as he seems to be doing well.

As Cinnybun says, pooping and peeing away + eating and drinking are the best signs of health in a case like this. There is a risk of a GI blockage if a bun gets too little water and too much dry food (no veg, just hay and pellets), but a bun with a blockage won’t poop and will have very reduced appetite, if any appetite at all. So just keep keeping an eye!

If he had fresh veg during the dry spell he got a good deal of water from that.

I completely changed out his litter and food after his bottle was filled, so that I could monitor intake and output. He’s acting normal (for him) and eating, drinking, peeing, pooping, so I’m going to assume he’s fine. I just worry a bit that some blockage could have started that I won’t know about until a later time.

              Thanks for the encouragment.

I’m glad he’s ok, it would be worth considering adding a second water bottle to the cage as a back up for potential situations like this. Even if one gets blocked or suddenly leaks out, there’ll still be one he can use
