I was in the rabbit room this morning and I noticed Stormy chewing on his plastic litter box. He did this like 3 years ago when he was a baby but never since. When I looked at his litter box it’s pretty chewed up (but I don’t know how much he chewed recently because it was already chewed some).

Should I take it away? What can I use instead of plastic? It’s a plastic corner litter box. I don’t know why he is chewing this . He has free choice hay all day. Should I be worried (I swear this bunny is gonna drive me to the crazy house!!!)

Does it look like he’s eating it? Maybe he just remembered when he was little and how fun it was to chew the box!

Chloe doesn’t chew her box, but Kahlua does! I’ve replaced his box a zillion times. That’s why you have to buy a litterbox with some staying power. I would repalce it. Once Kahlua almost chewed a hole in it! Yeah, they will drive you crazy!

I would replace the box and then maybe get some toys or make some that Stormy would
be interested to chew (rather than chew on his box!) goodluck with that! tell us how it goes.

You might try switching to a different litterbox that’s not high-backed and see if it helps.
Hareiette was chewing hers as well, but she stopped when we switched.

Might be a stupid idea but what about a small metal baking tray?

i dont know about metal baking trays… but i think the non-stick teflon coated ones should be avoided since it could be scraped off by busy nibbling teeth!

I found that metal isn’t a bad idea (like babybunsmum said avoid teflon) it just tends to rust from the urine and the plastic cleans easier and you don’t get a chemical reaction when you use vinegar to clean them.

my bunny chews on it some, but the problem is that he gets a hold of it with his teeth and like flips it over and pours out all his bedding and poo and pee.

My bunny chews from time to time on her food trough – which is also made out of plastic. However, the amount that she actually ‘eats’ is extremely minimal (as the damage to the trough isn’t significant) so I try not to worry. If I am not mistaken (and i could be) a little bit of plastic will simply go through her system. But don’t quote me on that.

Now, if she was actually ‘devouring’ the plastic, I’d remove it and find an alternative – but not sure what.

Pancake, an easy solution is to punch a hole in the lip and secure to the side of the cage with a notebook ring or other fastener for those feisty rabbits.
