Bunny at vet for stasis, should she come home?

Yesterday my bunny Daisy started to show signs of stasis so I rushed her to th ER vet where they gave her fluids and monitored her until she was transferred next door to her regular exotics vet. They did an X-ray and blood work and said her liver labs are elevated and her stomach is larger than normal in her X-ray. It’s currently 1:00pm so it’s been about 24 hours since she’s eaten anything or pooped. (ER vet said she had a couple of soft poops come out but that’s it.)

They said other than her disinterest in food and little to no poops, she is resting comfortably and they’re doing the usual GI stasis protocol. She’s getting subq fluids, reglan, buprenorphine for pain, an antibiotic and probiotics and I forget what else. They said they want to keep her overnight again but i have the option of having her stay overnight at the vet (they leave at 6pm and are back tomorrow at 9am) or they can transfer her again next door to the 24 hour clinic where they can give her IV fluids and monitor her. I am quickly burning through my care credit card and I’m about $800 deep right now.

I’m not sure how to weigh the options. Is it best to have her at he 24 hour clinic? Or stay at the vet’s office where there won’t be anyone overnight? Or should I take her home with me and administer her meds and fluids on my own? I do have some experience with this. I just want to make sure I give her the best care. I will spend absolutely whatever I need to but I’m worried about running out/maxing out my cards. I’m in school full time 2 hours away, she was at my moms when this happened so i drove up at 11pm and rushed her to the ER because I didn’t have anything on hand and didn’t want to waste any time (I lost my previous Bun because when I took her to the vet it was too late).

Any advice you guys have is truly appreciated. Thank you!!!!

If she is stable and they give you the meds plus some critical care, then I think you should bring her home with you. Buns recover better at home in familiar settings. At a minimum I would have her stay at the 24 hour clinic where someone would be there. I do not think she would do well at the closing vet place overnight all alone. Luna sends vibes ((((Daisy))))

Thank you!!! I do not feel comfortable leaving her alone for 12+ hours either. The 24 hour clinic just gave me an estimate for $390-$477 for the one night. It’s not that I don’t want to pay it but I don’t know if I can afford to and what if they want to keep her for >1 night? I will be even more broke than I already am as a college student. I want to take her home with me and back to school where I can be with her, I just worry about the stress of the 2 hour trip, but I know that she will be more comfortable at home. She is not liking being at the doctors office, as with anyone else who is sick

Yikes, I would pay anything for my bun too but that is one heck of an estimate. Is the clinic in a big city or something? I agree about the worry with the long trip home. If you do take her home right away, it’ll be important to keep an extra good eye on her (but keep your eyes on the road ) due to the added stress. If you can, make a couple short stops just to see if she will eat/drink something and to check on her temperature to make sure she’s not cold.

It worries me that a vet would be ‘happy’ to leave an unwell bunny in a unmanned clinic overnight….

We’re at a north Chicago vet which explains the high vet costs :/

Before we went home the vet said she still hadn’t eaten or pooped (it is now 48 hours since her last meal & poop) and that if she still isn’t doing better within 24 hours, she should be admitted to the ER again. She seemed to be doing better otherwise and I had this gut feeling that she was just stressed from the hospital. And *as soon* as we get home…she pooped!! It’s weird how relieved I am at the thought of seeing this little milk duds haha. She slowly started eating hay that night and then wanted greens in the morning.

She definitely needed to go to the hospital for treatment but I’m glad I’m having her recooperate at home She’s like me I guess, hates hospital food and only likes to poop at home lol
