So last night I came home to a smal redish stain on Bow-tie’s carpet area, and her belly and bottom and feet were covered in it. I was thinking it was just pee, but she normally does so well in her litterbox, but it was everywhere so I got a warm rag and cleaned her up. As I was doing so I noticed 2 sac looking things near her bottom. Is SHE a HE?? Are they bunny balls? or what is that fleshy stuff?  Oh and since my rabbit is already blushing that I’m asking such personal questions, I’ll ask one more… Do bunnies have menstration cycles, that include bleeding?

No, they don’t have cycles. They are “induced ovulators”, so they only release eggs when they are mated with. How old is your bunny? In males, the testicles typically descend anywhere from about 3-4 months… sometimes it’s a bit later, up to about 6 months.

Has she been to a rabbit-savvy vet for an initial exam/check-up yet?

Where did you get her from? It’s difficult to sex young bunnies, petstores tend to get it wrong more often than they get it right. It’s not a big deal with one bun, but this can cause many issues when a person brings home two females or two males… and then they end up with an accidental litter!

I got her from a co-worker and shes about 3 years old, never been spayed. I won’t be able to take her to a vet until the end of November, and since its just her I don’t have to worry about accidental litters. ;o)

Sometimes the pee is red, brown, orange, yellow and this is all normal. Some green veggies can make pee red and also the oxygen in the air can turn reddish. So if it was a uniform reddish stain on the carpet it was probably pee, However, if it was darkish red spot inside a pee stain this could be blood and she will need to see a vet. If she is actually a “she” and she has these growths(?) underneath – definately see vet.

I’m wondering if it is blood also. Those could be some sort of cysts that are bleeding, or a bite or infection. By 3 years old everyone who’s seen her would know if she’s a he, so it’s not sounding normal for a female. I think a visit to vet should be sooner than November.

Yes. Cysts, mammory tumors etc. (these can be benign by the way). How close to her bottom/tail are they?

I know nothing to help but I’m thinking that if you could post a picture it would be helpful for the more experienced ones to see exactly what you mean.

I don’t think its blood. I’m pretty sure its just pee. Plus I flipped the poor bunbun over to check out her ‘unmentionables’, and the two ‘sac’ looking things are kinda like flappy parts of flesh. I never noticed them before when I clipped her nails, but when I got her belly wet to clean her off, it pushed the fur away to make it a bit more noticeable. I don’t think its anything serious, just me noticing a new feature to my rabbit that I”ve only had for a few weeks. ;o)

That does sound like how Spockie’s parts looked, but he had an unmistakable penis, so that left no doubt.
On a female, it may be worth having an exam by a vet just to be sure.

To see if her pee is odd looking again, you could put a paper towel over her litter to see what color it is. It might be worth doing for a couple days just to keep an eye on the situation.

I’m glad you decide to get her spayed, it would also be a good idea for your vet to take a look at her to see what those sacs you described are…I’ve not ever seen anything like that except for the scent glands….did they smell kinda funky? You can check the “Monthly Maintenance” section of this site to see a little diagram of where the scent glands are.
