If something were to happen to me, my rabbit quartet would be split up and go to two different homes I have arranged this with. I couldn’t find anyone who would be able to take in my entire quartet so splitting them up is my compromise. Lint would go with Neigey and Mops would go with Deirdra. This is not a popular topic to discuss but it is a good idea to consider it. What will happen to your bunnies, or other pets, if you couldn’t look after them any longer due to an illness or even death?
Well if it was just me to go, my other half would care for them. And the rescue I work with would also be involved in finding homes for everyone if he could not care for them all, or we went together. I think finding the Dog a permenent residence may be harder, though i would think his mother would take her for us.
Has anyone a will? And have you considered leaving anything to a local rescue? A few people do that, leave some $$ to a rescue when they go. We even get donations in the memory of beloved family members, 2 and 4 legged kinds from family members which is so sweet I think.
well, i live with my mom so…. but if we all were to go. like some 2012 thing just took my family instead of the world
(LMFAO i sound rediculous!)
the cats would go to my neihbor. she loves the siamese cats and well we kinda battled over them when the original owner died
and the bunnies ….
*note to self,
make arrangment for bunnies when.. if i die during 2012

If only I were to die, my parents would take Stormy. If we all got into a big car accident together or something, I like to think my boyfriend would step up and take him, since he likes Stormy, and he’s the only person (besides me) Stormy trusts enough to hop into the lap of. In fact, he actually was the one to pick Stormy, simply because Stormy flopped on my chest when I first held him, and my boyfriend thought he had an awesome personality.
I know my parents have some arrangement for the horses and Starsky in their will, but it was written before Stormy came along.
My best friend has my power of attorney as well as is the executor of my will. He has instructions both verbally and in the will to turn my rabbits over to my girlfriend if I pass.
Though I don’t have an official will, my bun would probably go to my parents if I was the only one to die. If they were dead too, he’d probably go to my brother and ultimately back to the shelter. Actually, I haven’t considered until this thread who would take him if all of us kicked the bucket…
I should probably consider this more.
I had been thinking of this also. I have stated that Cotton is to be put down creamated and buried with me. For him I know he would be put down if he went to a shelter. He attacks if you smell like a male bun drawing blood and Slaps at you if you don’t. Cotton would have a hard time taking to someone else. He never allows others to pet him. HE has bitten someone who smelled like cigarette smoke who tried to pet him. He boxed at Mary the whole time she took care of him when I was away. He even boxed at me when I got back. He is too attached to me.
Ruby Ravishing will go to the person I got her from. I know she would find her a good home.
I have papers to make a will for I have a special way I want to be buried. I will add the info about Cotton Boo McChew and Ruby Ravishing too.
yeah, at 57 I should think about this…lol
I need to make a will and stipulate it, but I’ve already told both my kids to contact the rabbit rescue and give a donation I’ll have put away in cash (so it doesn’t get tied up) to take them.
If it’s just me, my hubby will take the buns. He loves the little furballs. If it is both of us, his mom will take them. She calls them her grandbunnies and adores them ![]()
How odd, I was actually going to post something along these lines, but thought I would be seen as morose for doing so. ^_^ But when you think about it, it’s a totally sensible idea.
I need to redo my ‘living will’ which I last rewrote back when I got diagnosed with cancer. Things have changed pretty drastically since then, so I need to make a new directive.
Most likely, if it’s just me who passes, either my hubby or my daughter will have the duty of caring for all the animals fall to them. There is no one else to take them on. My son is not interested in caring for animals, so he can pay off all my debts instead. ^_^ (hey, I’ve been paying his for years! it’s only fair!)
Seriously though, it’s a daunting thought. We just naturally assume we are going to outlive our pets…so far I’ve been right on that score…but you just never know what’s around that next corner. And it’s just too easy for anyone to come in after you are gone and do whatever strikes their fancy with your estate. I’ve seen it happen to too many folks.
But be sure it’s airtight. Especially if you’re going to leave any funds behind to care for your furbabies with. Even though my dad had a pretty thorough living will, the guy who became the executor blatantly flaunted disregard for his wishes and spent quite a few years just playing with his assets until I was able to get control of it myself. We wound up losing about half the value we started out with during those years.
I thought about this when I was getting Jeannie. One bunny, my sister could have probably handled if I died, but two… idk if she’d be up for that, even though we all know that 2 bonded bunnies are the same as one, lol. And now that I have Nick, it would be quite a lot of work for my parents or my sister (who is starting college this fall). I can do it though becasue I love them, and it’s FUN for me to take care of them all, even when I have to scoop poop and dump litter boxes, lol. Most likely, my boyfriend would take them all – at least he said he would… he has allergies though, lol. I’ve been thinking I need to get a living will in place to take care of my fur babies should anythinig happen, I just turned 21, and I suddenly feel very VERY old!
I don’t think it is a matter of age at all. Anyone can die, and as pet owner should appoint a caregiver for theirs.
Yes, Petzy, you’re right, anyone can die. I just don’t think a will is something a typical 21 year old thinks about. Then again, I’m far from “typical”
And having pets brings a whole other level of responsibility.
I didn’t just mean you!
Sorry, if I came across like that. I wanted to add that pet owners of any age should have a plan for their pets for such a case, even if it is totally unlikely for them to pass away or get seriously ill.
I have trust fund for my species, as my number is always changing so i have kept it to that. I have spoken to a friend in regards to the rabbits and birds both of which he would take and my estate will give him a monthly expense to care for them. Once all the animals have passed then the remaining fund passes to my parents then my sister then her children and if there is none of that then to selected charities. Both my bird sets are only young (approx 5 years) and both species can live for approx 30 years so I had to do something!
I have thought about this before but not put anything official into place. I have many siblings and know they would step up and take in my rabbits. I don’t want to burden anyone though so I think it’s worth looking into an option (alternative home) they could take if they found it to be too much. This thread serves as a good reminder. I only have a care list for Jersey for when I went away some time ago. Nothing is up to date. I believe more thorough notes would be beneficial to a future care-giver if it ever came to that.
Since I live alone, Sammy would be taken in by either my parents or more likely my brother, sister-in-law, or a niece or nephew. My boss’ granddaughters might even want her. I have all the supplies needed, so it would be up to them who was in the best position to take her.
One thing I found was very nice to have in my wallet is a card that says “I have a pet………at home. Please contact in case of emergency.” I think I put both my parents who live nearby and the Office Management of my apartment complex, since they can let themselves or someone else in to get to my bunny.
That card in your wallet is an excellent idea. I like that.
My jerk bf said he would put them to sleep and bury them with me…that’s the morbid morbid sense of humor here…
but realisitically it’s been discussed and he would continue on with them as if they were his own with my rents doing vet bills. And your right. It’s not fun to talk about but stuff happens, and it’s best to figure it out before hand ‘
My mom used to think that it is too hard to take care of rabbits.
Right now, I cannot bring my rabbit with me because I’m in internship program. My mom didn’t mind to take care of my pet so I taught her pretty much everything what she need to know how to take care of my rabbit.
Its been 5 weeks, my mom LOVE him already and kept telling me that rabbit is hers not my rabbit anymore. I laughed my butt off and told her to dream on!
anyway, back to the point, lucky my mother will take care of my rabbit if I die. If I didn’t go to internship program, then my mother will send him to animal shelter. But right now, she cannot sent him to animal shelter because Romeo is too cute for her
Yay, good job, Romeo! ![]()
