Bun wetting herself after spay

Hi everyone, 

I just need a little bit of advice…

My little girls were spayed yesterday. Everything was very fine and the vet said they had all ate after waking up from the anesthetic. I monitored them pretty closely overnight (got up every couple of hours to make sure their heat packs were warm enough/checked that they were eating etc) and I noticed that my little mini lop, Peach, had wet herself. I put a clean towel down for her and just thought that it might have been because she was too sore to move to do a wee. But this morning, after I gave her the pain medication, I noticed that she had wet herself again. Has anyone else experienced this with their buns after surgery? I’m a little worried because she just continued to sit in her wee and I’m concerned about it getting on the wound. The other 2 buns are feeling a bit sorry for themselves, but they are at least moving around and eating much more than Peach. Peach ate a bit of kale this morning (but not the banana or apple I offered her, even though these are usually her favourites). 

I called the vet this morning and they said to monitor her eating and to clean her up if she’s been sitting in her wee. They didn’t say how to clean her or what to clean her with. Any advice on how to clean her? 

I’m just worried. My buns are like my babies and I feel really terrible that they are going through this.

You can use saline eyewash for humans or you can boil water, let it cool and use that. just try and rinse the pee out, then pat dry. A microfiber towel is the most effective type of towel. Is she on oral antibiotics? If she isn’t, it might be good to use triple antibiotic cream on the incision area after drying her.

The incontinence can be due to swelling in the area. Hopefully it will resolve hrself. Urin is sterile when it leaves the body, but it’s a good medium for bacteria to grow in, so it should be cleaned away. Maybe you could use puppy pee pads in her cage for the next week or so. If she pees on a pee pad and sits in it, she won’t get as soaked.

Greens are usually the first food they go back to after a spay/neuter. Pellets is generally the last. I tried to give my Bam sweet treats after his neuter, he’s normally a glutton for anything sweet. But nope, he just wanted greens. Fragrant herbs like parsley, cilantro or mint are often appreciated.

Thanks for getting back to me – She’s not on any antibiotics. Just the pain medication. She hasn’t wet herself since yesterday, so I think she’s on the mend. I’m just being quite pedantic in cleaning their pen. I’d hate for their wounds to get infected.

I really just wasn’t expecting her to be quite so poorly after the surgery. I did a lot of research pre-spay and I didn’t read anything about incontinence, so it worried me a fair bit. They’ve all been pretty active though and the incision seems to be healing well. 

I offered them some mushed banana last night and they were all very keen on it.  Still no pellets though. I tried some cilantro and basil (they usually LOVE basil), but they weren’t interested.

I’m glad to hear it!

It ‘s not uncommon for a girl bun to be pretty out of it after a spay. It’s after all quite a big surgery. The main issue is to get them back to eating. What they eat is less important.

As a consequence of their temporary change in dietary preferences, you often see poop irregularities for up to two weeks post surgery.

My doe was a pellet fiend but even she wasn’t interested in eating pellets at first after her spay.
