Bun got into the oats!

My boys love oats as treats. The breeder gave them oats as babies and now they love them. To get them into their cages when each bun’s time is up, we shake the oat jar and they hop right in. Sometimes Asriel will be a bit stubborn and he’ll stay out, so we’all put the open jar in his cage and wait for him to smell them. Tonight, we left the the open jar in his cage, but we ended up dozing off. We woke up to Asriel jumping all over us (a miracle in itself), and the oat jar was knocked over. There was a good amount in the drop tray, but I have no idea how much he actually ate. He was alone for a good 5 hours. He seems fine currently. Very happy, binkies, zoomies, and asking for pets. How worried should I be? Is there anything critical that I need to do?

I’m not an expert on oats, but i would get him to eat as much hay, pellets and greens as possible to flush the oats out of his system quickly. This is what I do when I suspect Autumn ate something bad. If he stops eating for 12 hours or more, take him to the vet as it could be a sign of gut stasis. Don’t think it’s cause for much worry but keep an eye on him.

Keep a close eye. The problem is mainly that oats swell in the tummy. It all depends on how much he ate. I think I’d call my vet for advice. In any case, if he stops eating and/or pooping I’d contact the vet sooner rather than later.

He’s eaten a ton of hay since then and all his greens. His pellets not so much, but like I said in my other post, he’s not a fan of the adult pellet. He’s drinking normally too. I think my saving grace is that he’s not like Bombur. Asriel nibbles at his food. He’s never been a face stuffer. So I don’t think he ate that many.

I’m having a similar problem with Bam tonight, although I know for certain he ate a considerable amount of dried fennel. He must’ve knocked the jar over on the table so the lid came off. I dont know how bad dried fennel is, and there’s no vet to call for the next 11.5 hours.

I can’t say about dried fennel, but I sometimes feed Thor large quantities of fresh fennel (also known as anise) she loves it and has always been fine tummy wise. I hope Bam is doing ok!

Oh boy, Bam and Asriel & Bombur- why do bunnies get into things when no vets are open?? It never fails!

If Lukie got his paws on a container of oats, I’m afraid he would eat until he popped. Literally. He is that greedy.

Bam, what a strange thing for a bunny to eat! I would think it would be way too strong a taste for rabbit taste buds. Guess not!

I really hope both of your rabbits will be fine- I have a feeling they will be ☺! I know it won’t stop the worrying though ?. Hope the night is full of lots of hay eating and nice big plentiful poops!! ?

Bam loves fennel. Last spring fennel was very cheap here, after a period of fresh veg shortage due to cold weather in southern Europe, so I bought lots, sliced them up and dried them on my mushroom dryer. I use them as treats. Bam is on a diet currently, so hunger must’ve driven him up onto the table, where he hit the fennel jackpot. Note to self: Always keep bunny treats in glass jars with screw-on lids, or those treats aren’t safe.

And yes, buns tend to do stuff like that on weekends and big holidays =(
