So, as some of you may know, now it’s been almost a year since K almost died and lost one ear in the process.

Since he seems to like to try and die about once a year, I’m getting increasingly nervous ^__^”

I’m feeling a tiny lump right in the middle of his remaining ear and it feels like a hard cyst of about 1 or 2 mm. It’s been like this for about a week now, so I think it might be a sebaceous cyst or similar? We still don’t have mosquitoes and I’ve been keeping his quarters obsessively cleaned so I don’t think it could be an insect bite.

He doesn’t scratch it, the tissue is not red or irritated, he’s missing some fur but he’s still molting after all.

Yep, booking a trip to the vet for this week, but I was wondering if anyone ever had something similar on their buns.

I’m almost sad I have to haul him to the other side of town for something that’s probably not even worth medical attention, but I’m traumatized

Ah Moosh. You know you’re doing the right thing….! We’ve had hardy cysty things that turn out to be nothing, so go get it checked out, but DON’T PANIC !!!

Better to be 80% sure than 20% wrong…. or something like that…..

Bam has a lump like that in his right ear. It’s not big enough to really be a lump, it’s a mm across and flat. Almost same color as the ear. He’s had it like always, I feel it when I pet his ears. I didn’t remember which ear when I started writing this post so I went and checked. Right ear, in the middle lengthwise.

It doesn’t change or grow. Bad things tend to grow. They also tend to be irregular in shape.

It sounds like Bam’s, it’s like a hard flat circle with about no discolouring of the skin and no missing fur, right in the middle of the ear. It came to me that K had a little scab around there this summer, it might be a weird cicatrization of whatever that was. It’s not changing in size and I think it would be too dangerous to cut the skin open and remove it since we can’t endager his only ear…

This rat just isn’t lucky xD

It could be some form of scar tissue, I’ve always assumed Bam’s was a wart of some harmless type. I pet his ears on a daily basis, so if it were to grow, I’d soon notice. I think you should keep an eye. Bam’s lump/bump is not irritated, it doesn’t seem at all tender to the touch.

Sorry == server error keeps me away these days. The bump is pretty much the same, still. It’s a tiny bit puffy now, probably cause I’ve touched and bothered it to try and see if it gives off pain or itch ^_^; Also vet is superbusy, so we’re gonna meet next week…

The scar tissue might be a good idea, he had a scab on there few months ago and on closer ispection it’s not a dot, but more like a small round flat thickening under the skin. I’ll let it be for a few days, so I don’t make it worse. I also thought about circling it with pen or something, but still don’t want to poison the rat

                        Back from the vet~

So, he didn’t know for certain what it is, but it didn’t grow so he said it might be just a bump like humans get moles or cysts. He said to keep an eye on it but he thinks it shouldn’t grow or anything. He said that if it were in another spot he’d order a cytology just to be extra-sure, but it’s right beside the main arthery of the ear (of his only ear!) so that’s out of question. K’s always so lucky =_= *groan

I hope it’s nothing to worry about. Bam has had his for as long as I can remember and he’s been with me for +6 years.

As you know things to look for are thickening, flaking, seepage, bleeding and of course widening. On a black bun color changes would be hard to notice.

I know, black buns are a nightmare sometimes. I’ve been observing it with a flashlight from the inside of the ear, vet told me it’s a good idea to do that regularly until enough months have passed to be sure it is indeed nothing to worry about. I fervently hope so, maybe this year we can be drama-free!

Luna had a scab under her chin that turned into a tiny flesh-colored bump. Vet also believed it was a cyst/mole and just told me to keep an eye on it to make sure it didn’t get bigger. It flattened out/disappeared eventually.

It started as a little scab, so I hope it will either heal up or just remain like this. Right now it’s lightly swollen, probably because the vet yday examined it very throughly.

Guys I just had a thought. I was bitten by a spider in january, on my chin. I got a hard lump on my chin (so much so that the doctor couldn’t move the thing around and my lip was a bit stiff). It went away only after almost a week with topic cortisone. Could K have been bitten too?

The thing is still the same (not bigger, not smaller) but I can’t shake this thought off my head. Vet told me to wait it out and to not put anything on it, buuuut… hypotethically is there anything that could be applied to see if it reduces? If anyone has a good idea I could call the vet back and propose that
(no, I won’t put cortisone on my rabbit’s only ear don’t worry)

Spiders *shudder*. That is a good point; it could well be an insect bite. Sorry, I don’t know what you could put on it though.

The other problem is that I’m so out of it lately that I don’t remember if I mentioned my spider adventure to the vet. I might have just asked if it could be a mosquito or spider bite…. He did specifically tell me to not treat it and turned down my suggestion to use Hypermix (neem ointment).

I think he wants to see the natural decorse of this thing (if there is one at all), but without medication I’d have carried around my spider bump for a long time…

I think I’m again in the rambling fase. Apologies lol

So, update! Def it was an insect bite. After I put K on his monthly dose of Advantage to prepare him for when it will be time to experience the outside again, the lump started to slowly deflate.

I’ve since deep cleaned EVERYTHING and I trust that the Advantage will help keeping bitey bugs off him.

That’s relieving. As horrible as bugs are, it’s better than never knowing what caused it.
