Hi my rabbit Bugs has a broken nail. I can see it’s all the way at the base and there is sone dry blood. I feel like it’s been there for a while and he’s walking and running okay. Nothing changed in his diet I believe. He still tries to hump my leg everyday. So should I clip it off? Because there is absolutely no nail left. I’m not sure if it’s infected though. There’s a little spot that’s black but I don’t know if it’s on his nail or the toe itself

If it’s no longer bleeding then it’s probably OK. Definitely do not cut it further! If it’s still bleeding you can apply cornstarch or styptic powder to help it clot.

Do you know how it might have happened? It would be good to figure out the cause so you can prevent it from happening again. I once had a bunny catch a nail on a wire cage (years ago… before I knew that wire cages hurt their feet), it healed fine without any intervention from me.

If you think his toe may be broken or if you notice any signs of infection you should take him to the vet.

Well it’s hanging off so I just wanted to cut it off not further. The nail is hanging off right at the bed of the toe. He doesn’t have a floor wired cage but the walls are which shouldn’t be a problem. I can’t really think of anything other than him trying to jump onto things and failing and trying to catch his self and a lot of other things. Is flour all right to use? Hos toe doesn’t look swollen but he is making it really hard to see it clearly

Hmmm, were his nails very long? Sometimes when they are too long they break more easily.

I don’t feel like I can advise you on whether to cut it… if it really is just dangling then it should be ok, but I sounds like there is a risk of damaging it further. If you gentle touch that toe does he flinch or react in any way?

Are you familiar with the “Press-press-clip” way of trimming nails?

If it isn’t bleeding anymore then there is no need to use corn starch or otherwise. If it is still bleeding at this point he should be seen by a vet anyway, as it’s been a long time!
